^^ And an excellent bit of analysis it is, coyrls --more like that around here wouldn't be at all a bad thing

The Surgeon of Crowthorne As any statistician should know, averages do not tell the whole story - it's the spread that's gone into the average that's important. Extrapolating from an average without applying some sort of variance is meaningless.

Wimb
CMRoyal But hey, if Shane took it all on face value and took confidence from that (something of which I am also growing sceptical) then fair play to all concerned.

totally 'greed. Same with the 'MACSTATS' where cup wins were counted as 3 points ;)

Coming soon: local Icelandic daily publishes feature article about Sig in which he and especially McDermott credit the resurrection to sober critiques, statistical perspectives and an undergirding even emotional keel, all gleaned from fansite messageboard

the malian herald jimmy kebe has cited fans on an internet message board as being key in the ressurrection of his Reading FC career.
speaking to reporter david mcdoofus yesterday the malian magician stated that he had become depressed and lost all confidence due to booing at the stadium, and some savage critiques of his ability on RFCs leading internet fan site.

however, constant spirited posts in his defence have helped him put his inconsistent form to bed, and has resulted in a run of games where he has finally started to look every inch the premiere league player he was bought to be.jimmy said" id just like to thank brendywendy, maguire and bigfoot for helping me fulfil my potential here. id be nothing without them

Snowball To NOT take into account time on pitch and starts seems crazy to me

You can take them into account, but you can't extrapolate. You can't directly compare six 15-minute appearances by one player with one 90-minute appearance by another. As a rough guide, maybe, but not as a like-for-like comparison.

Have I ever said it was anything but a rough guide?

I use THE SAME RULES for all players. Starts = 90 minutes (tho they don't) and subs = 15 minutes (though they don't)

but when that rule of thumb was tested it got the total minutes almost exactly right.

Shane's older figures often included time as a sub rather than a start, but for the last 12 months they have been mostly STARTS

This season since B-Mac took over

League 12 (8) Cup 2 (3) TOTAL 14 (11)

STARTS in Bold

0 55 Swanesa (55)
0 60 Plymouth (60)
0 73 Bristol (73)
0 55 Swansea (55)

2 90 Plymouth
0 77 Liverpool (sub 77)
1 39 Liverpool (sub 39)
0 22 Forest (sub 22)
0 26 Burnley (sub 26)
0 90 Sheff Utd
1 90 Barnsley
1 90 Doncaster

0 48 WBA (48)
2 90 Villa
1 90 Derby
0 90 Bristol

12 Starts
04 Sub appearances

8 goals BUT SEVEN OF HIS EIGHT GOALS CAME WHEN HE STARTED

and last season, when he finally got his run in Feb-Apr

7 Starts 5 sub appearances AND 5 OF HIS SIX GOALS CAME WHEN HE STARTED

779 Minutes = 8.66 "Games" 6 goals

PS Note this again. 12 from Shane's last 14 goals came WHEN HE STARTED.

That sort of puts to bed the bullsh!t that he can only score when he comes on as a sub, wouldn't ya say?

The person I spoke to "only knew" that Shane was here two weeks ago
at his old club and raffled a pair of his boots, had photographs and that stuff..."

So (a) No newspaper report

but (b) maybe he SAID this stuff at his old club two weeks ago, (or not)

Snoball - have you ever considered that if Shane Long read this board and was grateful for your support of him, he might have logged in and sent you a message?

LOL @ phoning the newspaper up though!

Nope. That would be extremely unlikely. Players are probably "advised" not to read
the boards, but I'll bet they are formally banned from openly posting on them.

PS Shane flew to Ireland for the weekend cos training was canceled for Sunday and Monday

Re-reading the original "article" it strikes me that provincial journalistic standards must really have dropped for it to seem credible to so many of us. No offence to starfish, it was a great idea.
