I think if we play like we did last night, we will surely get battered by Boro

Spurs fan who came with me to the game couldn't believe anyone would pay money to watch that!! I did tell him its not normally that bad (well based on the previous 3 home games)

regardless of their performance they are an awful club.
and lol at them dominating us.
there were two sides who just cancelled each other out, neither getting much sight of goal, neither doing anything more than the other till the sending off.

LOL, i'd worry more about your gormless fans than QPR m8.

enough already fakey!

[quote="readingfc13"]For the first time in his tenure as Reading manager, McDermott got the tactics massively wrong last night. I presume he was the one telling Mills to hit the long ball rather than getting anyone to drop short and pick the ball up off him. Time and time again we saw long balls forward to Shane Long who had 4 QPR players nearer to him that the nearest Reading player and even if he won the ball where was he going to go with it?! If the tactics were to go long then why didn't we either a) try and get the likes of the Sig, Kebe and McAnuff closer to Long or b) go 442 from the outset? The booing was disgraceful but I can understand the frustration of the situation. In recent weeks in which we have been successful, we have seen Reading get the ball down and attack with pace but our play was completely void of this last night. I agree with the concept of changing the way we play for different opposition but in the form we are in it wasn't really warranted. First half QPR were the superior side last night, they played with skill, guile, pace and accurate passing, all things which we have shown we are capable of. Had they not gone down to 10 I think we would have been fortunate to get a draw. quote]

I agree with this. Hardest game for a while and I thought QPR had our measure, and early on seemed to be playing with an edge we lacked. An important element in our recent success has been the way in which McD has simplified our play and made us more direct. But last night it seemed to me we were overdoing it and resorting to long balls but without variety or sufficient pace. The long ball game may have been understandable while it was 11 v 11, given how QPR were playing (although even then it was questionable - a few times we launched the bal lto Shane Long, he won it, but there was no one in support. Once he won a header and then ran onto it himself, whcih was impressive in terms of work rate but unlikely to be a winning tactic).

But once we (luckily) gained a numerical advantage I reall could not understand why we didn't pass the ball around with some speed and variety. the number of passes that went out of play was depressing. Towards the end, as the game stretched, we did exert some pressure, and eventually it paid off, but it could easily not.

That said, I remember thinking in the first half that if we won this it would show real progress (bearing in mind the way they humilated us at Loftus Road - worst Reading performance I've seen in more than a decade). And we won - so that's a definite plus.

Tredder
ZacNaloen Unless he means they tried to bully our players with some success as the ref let them get away with, then yeh I guess they did.

Huh?

think he means all of the fouls you committed that didnt get a free kick, or got one th ewrong way, otr didnt get teh booking it deserved.

tbf ifr both sides are saying the ref was awful then he must have been pretty consistent.
but if it helps you deal with last night, crack on

Tredder Congratulations on celebrating a penalty win against 10 men, you'd have thought you'd have won the league, and this isn't sour grapes, but is there a bigger set of collective gimps than the east stand, booing your own player, scoring, and then singing his name, oh, and are all your player songs tunes derived from the 80's, i doubt if the players in questions have ever heard of the tune, not old enough, saying that, highlights were obviously Matt Mills and the embarrassing stewarding of singling out supporters for standing up and then writing their name into a pad for reference, what a joke, lowlights, the homer referee, the ccorner of the east stand and a very dubious double yellow card, which again, ruined a potentially good game, but from where you sit in the league, you have a genuine shot at the play offs, go get em Floyd.

Terminal Boardom That was the worst game of football I have seen since the days of Porterfield and Branfoot. QPR looked a bit special first half and I thought they were one of the best sides to come to our place this season. As for the second half, The aimless, pointless hoofball bugged me so much that I got up and left with 25 minutes to go. I think it was after the 6th or 7th cross field diagonal by Mills that broke this camel's back.

Having seen QPR quite a few times this season (my wife's a fan), I think Warnock has turned them in to a bunch of thugs. They came to stop us playing and they did. To be fair they 'out musclelled' us in midfield, but so many times, it was only just within the laws of the game.

The Rouge
Franchise FC
The Rouge I agree with Tredds really. There have been plenty of times when we were the better team and lost, but I thought QPR were the better team last night.

I think the guy was very unlucky to get sent off for those 2 'offences'. Fed seemed to make a lot of little/no contact for the second. I think the first was fair enough even though Long was ducking a bit.

The pen i have watched three times and still not sure. Good bit of skill – the guy hangs a leg a bit but gylfi looking for it and going nowhere as ball prob going out...... – still undecided.

Doh ! Where in the laws of the game does it say anything about where the ball is when a foul is committed ? The fact that Gylfi was going nowhere makes the challenge even more stupid, but no less a pen

I dont care what it says in the rules, if you don't think 'where the ball is going' affects referees' penalty decisions then you are deluded.

Surely the only decision it influences is whether to give a card as well as a pen?

All these quotes about it being a stonewall pen. From where I sit in the North, Hill definately played the ball out for a corner. I am very vocal in my appeals for pens / free kicks etc and such was my certainty it was not a penalty, I didn't mutter a word (not that I am moaning mind). Players (genuine) reactions are always a good indication and that may explain why QPR as a man berated the ref (who was shocking throughout).

Also the comments about McD making errors. It seems almost scandalous to have a pop at McD but felt he made 2 strange calls last night. Firstly there was definately less energy shown and think this was a game too far. Whilst there is the school of thought about not changing a winning side, we have a decent enough bench not to overly weaken the side and give 3-4 players a rest / run out. Secondly IMO Jimmy on the right and Jobi on the left is a far better scenario than vica versa. I don't think it is any coincidence that Jimmy's last 2 performances haven't hit the dizzy heights of the previous 3-4 having moved to the left.

As for the Matt Mills saga, whatever.

Onwards and upwards

Whether he played the ball is irrelevent if he had to also "play" the player to do so.

SWLR First decent, well-organised team we have played in a while. They cut-out our supply to the wide-men and were first to the second-ball. I thought we were lucky to go in 0-0.
I think some are confusing the open games of recent weeks with a hard, physical and tight match between two equal teams on the up and fired-up.
They played the 10 men game well. Again cutting out the supply wide and through the middle leaving the centre-halves little opportunity to 'create'.

As you say we still won and we kept pluggin away.

+1 on that. I expected a tough, tight game and that's what it was. It was good test to see us pitted against a good team who had been set up to play against us. Even when down to 10 men QPR were defending strongly and commited to trying to get a result - some of their players were shattered at the end and Hall's legs were almost wobbling under him in the closing minutes.

So I put this down as a decent victory, some could say we got a lucky break with the first yellow card on their player who got sent off - but that's football.

The guy hung his leg out and Gylfi went over it...answer ...do not hang your leg out ..even Warnock admitted that...the player certainly did not get the ball as he claimed so he can have no complaints....and as for saying you could not see how we were going to score what were you watching ??..the goal line clearances were brilliant and there were several other crosses that should have been converted..yes we could have tried to pass through midfield but it was a minefield because QPR were excellent there..I think Raziak should have come on at half time if we were going long and it was bold to take off a cmf instead of a front man but yet another shout BM has got right (in the end).

QPR pulled a classic Warnock display of anti-football to kill any threat we had. Just turn it into an ugly battle of head-tennis and physical battles and he knew we'd struggle.

I agree that nobody in their right mind could enjoy watching that every week. It won't exactly attract the missing thousands back to Loftus Road. I had to laugh at them singing about empty seats etc, when they only get 13000 at Loftus Road - a significantly more empty % than we average.

C W*nker said:

"You can say that the red card cost us. We defended really well. Damion's first booking is never a booking in a million years. He never took his eye off the ball."

Maybe not Colin, but our phsyio had to take Long's eye off Stewart's boot!

You really do turn teams around quickly. Several QPR players demonstrated mastery of your thuggish tactics last night and Stewart had already shown signs of being your star pupil.

But thanks once again for the extra entertainment that you provide. It's usually worth the admission money on its own!

I think you're missing a very important point. There doesn't have to be any contact with the keeper. You get booked for deliberately obstructing the keeper's attempt to take the drop kick quickly and set up a counter attack. No different from obstructing, or pulling back a player as he tries to break clear. The way I saw it, Fed's slipped as he kicked the ball (perhaps partly due to Stewart's action) but there was no contact.

Hey any team wins ugly now and then, surly the win takes priority ? we have come so far these last couple of months there will always be the odd blip, as for McDermott, maybe as suggested on some threads here, getting it wrong well he is still very much on a learning curve here, so far so good, if maybe with a little luck.

Yeah he was mad that guy wasnt he....i mean totally nuts, im amazed it took till half time to get him out. I think he was upset that he couldnt get a Chelsea ticket, poor fella. We were truly awful in the second half last night - makes winning all that more sweeter....And i was at the first game at Loftus Road (my that was an enjoyable evening!) and the crowd was about 11,500....So they really are taking the piss - furthermore they could have had that entire away end, but they could only fill half of it and were totally silent in the first half....They sung a bit in the second, but then they were feeling hard done by, and that always spurs on an away end....I did enjoy the 'have you ever met your dad' chant to the little oiks standing in the corner in the QPR end....And the Mills thing, that was fun, all in all a top night....

It's all about the turn around that was shown. It was a messy game to watch, not a purists match but far far better to watch from a results point of view than the car crash at Loftus Road. The penalty awarded was due to sheer persistance from Siggy when it looked like a point was on the cards.
It's good to see the team still going for a win right to the very end. Three penalties awarded in three games. Two converted.

On the sending off, it's totally irrelevant whether the first yellow was harsh or not in my opinion. He was given it and was stupid enough to make what sounds like an idiotic and petulant foul on our goalkeeper despite having already been booked.

Frankly, the first yellow could have been given for sucking this thumb and he'd still have deserved to go for doing that whilst already on one. If only for near terminal stupidity.

Well done to QPR, they sounded like they really stifled and bullied us, but didn't seem to have many genuine scoring chances. Perhaps a draw would have been a fairer result, but then that's what you get if one of your players gets themselves stupidly sent off in the first half and then you give away a blatant late penalty. Especially against the form team in the division.

LOL @ Tredder
