Way back on Dec 28th, Brian McDermott suffered what is still his worst performance in charge at RFC. Having played 2 days earlier, on Boxing Day, he elected to make just one change to his line up and we were beaten out of sight by lowly Plymouth.
Faced with exactly the same dilema today, in came a fresh central midfield and 2 man strike force with Long and Gilfy relegated to the bench and Howard nowhere in sight.
As expected, the change was seamless other than we were starting with 4 fresh pairs of legs. Not even the 106 team could make so many changes to the starting line up and still produce such a comprehensively superior 45 minutes of football. There were times when I just looked on in disbelief at how far we've come in such a short time. As is so often the case in these situations, the second half failed to live up to expectations. Coventry, not surpringly, were obviously intent on avoiding embarrassment and, with some of our team having played more than half a game with 10 men just 48 hour earlier, a clean sheet was a more than decent out come.
Coventry were
not dire we just made them look that way and I, too, made the observation today that this team is so much better to watch than anything Brendan looked like producing in the three years he thought he deserved regardless of any noticeable progress on the pitch.
I agreed with Mick Gooding in that we would have been a match for anyone in that first half. Simply, we are now one of the best teams in the division and way too good for average Championship sides like Coventry.
Kebe was immense, Mills is a class act and Karacan did exactly what was required but I'd give Jay Tabb a special mention. He's really starting to look like the lynch pin around which we can build next seasons team............................................and, I would not have fancied being one of several Coventry players who he beat in the air today when Chris Coleman broached the subject in the dressing room
I fear the season will run out of steam with most of us clamouring for more but we must all cast our minds back just a few months and thank our luck stars.........................and this new bloke called Brian.
