8 Years Ago Today

by Tony Le Mesmer » 20 Apr 2010 08:49

Arguably the most pivotal moment in our recent history. I almost shit myself at this game. :D

HNA's favourite non active browser 'Lyndo' called me from Australia at full time to get the score, when i told him, which was at 3am Aus time, he shouted 'GET IN THERE READING HAVE BEEN PROMOTED' down a busy Sydney street, to which i heard a distant reply from a local saying 'what the f'uck are yer talkin about mate'

That half-time was the longest 15 minutes of my life. LOL at me standing in the longest-ever toilet queue, shaking with fear, just to kill some time.

I've never been so nervous in the build up to a game and even after Curo's equaliser couldn't bring myself to sing "the Royals are going up" until the final whistle had gone to confirm it.

The joy and relief at the end was something else as was the night of celebration. Beer, cigars and a brick lane curry - mmmmmm.

The tension on the day was too much for me. I did a 'Likely Lads' (Warning: Old F*rt reference to 60's/70's sitcom) and avoided all news of the game until it was over.

Phew !

the great thing was tickets were only £2 that day for under 16's 8)

Another weird bit of trivia is to my knowledge and from my experience it's been the only away game you could only apply for tickets via the post.

Who the hell were Roget and Talia??

Anyway, I missed out on a ticket and ended up passed out in a boozer round the corner from Griffin Park after unsuccessfully attempting to climb into the away end.

Is this the game they had on a big-screen rented out at the stadium?

Yes, indeed it was. And the first few minutes of the second half went missing due to a power cut, I think, which frustrated a lot of us.

My Dad was on a tour of the Nou Camp when it all happened. Seem to remember him getting so frustrated with it all that he got us to put a phone next to the radio so he could listen from abroad.

Great day for the club, and in some respects the most important moment of our recent history as we wouldn't be where we are now if it wasnt for that, the way we were playing, the playoffs would have been arduous and embarassing.

Leo Roget was a defender signed on-loan from Stockport IIRC, I believe he signed just before we played Swindon on Valentine's Day that season.

Frank Talia was a goalkeeper formely of Swindon we took on a free temporarily.

Muppet met Seb at that game.

It was fantastic. More so because Schards' exhorbitant solicitor was a Brentford fan!! Ha! Take that!

IIRC the tension of the day was because we had drawn all those games and were then just hoping to scrape up in 2nd place-a bit like Forest,Leeds,Rochdale and Oxford this season when it feels as though it is all slipping away.
Funnily enough the Wembley game v Bolton although played for much higher stakes was less tense because at that time most of us couldn't believe that we were in touching distance of the top level for the first time and of course (compared to 8 years ago when we were the big spenders of the lower levels) the squad had hardly cost anything.

It is odd how we ended up getting so many of their players and going on to be more successful than with our own players from that day.

Without doubt the greatest day I've ever had supporting the club. The AD was a sea of blue and white that night. Superb !
