Michail Antonio given new Reading FC deal

by gonesy » 28 Apr 2010 22:40

Just read this on getreading. Bit of a shocker after today's news :o
Very pleased though, would have been a shame to lose him after his development.

Done well out on loan so far, must be a prospect as anyone who saw his performance in the cup final would have to admit, why would we not give him a new deal if we want him to stay??

Well that is a surprise. Back on loan to Saints? Or has he done enough to get a full pre-season here and try and push his way in? Hope so. He looks uselful.

Or could it be a case of giving him a deal so that we get a reasonable fee for him from Southampton?

Me and my dad were discussing Mr Antonio yesterday and we both said we would swap him for Rickie Lambert

We would have got a small amount of compo any way. I can't see the player agreeing that new deal just to be sold straight away.

I thought the contract was an option RFC could chose to take up, which presumably he agreed to when we signed him in late 2008. My guess is that he would be a free agent this summer otherwise and we'd get bugger for him.

We would have got compensation due to his age.

But thats only if we decided to offer him a contract (and he rejects it)........if we just thought he wasn't good enough, we would release him and then he's free to sign for anyone.

Offering him a contract was never an option, taking up the option to extend his current deal was (which Antonio has nosay in). Therefore if we hadn't taken up the option he would have joined Southampton for nothing (no conpensation).

And even if we were to get compensation it would have been next to nothing because we haven't contributed much in developing him having only signed him in 2008.

I always thought that anyone under the age of 23 (is that right?) and out of contract meant you still got a compensation payment?

Only if you've offered them a deal to stay - otherwise it's restraint of trade.

If you dont extend their contract then they are free to leave........but 6 months before the contract ends other teams can also offer him a deal, if he accepts and is under 23 then compensation is paid.

That is also incorrect. You can only do that with trasnfers involving players playing under a different football association.

Excellent news. From what I've heard from southampton supporters he is a very good player. Scored a few goals as well.

:D
