The 24 year old defender is able to operate in a number of positions, in the centre of defence, as a holding midfielder, or as right back.

we are only paying 50% of his wages at the moment-if we can shift some of the deadwood and high earners i'm sure an offer of 75% and guarenteed first team football would be enough to convince him

Looking at his carrer in the UK has not really held down a full season anywhere so far, so a move to us might well be very tempting, even with a drop in salary.

According to the EP Zurab is not likely to sign....

Reading look set to miss out on signing centre-back Zurab Khizanishvili after being priced out of the market by Blackburn Rovers. The Georgia captain impressed during a four-month loan spell at Madejski Stadium and had made public his desire to stay in Berkshire for next season.

But Royals manager Brian McDermott has conceded that any deal to bring the 28-year-old back to the club looks dead now Rovers have put a six-figure sum on his head.

McDermott told the Post: “It’s a difficult situation as he has another year left on his contract. You can never have enough quality centre-backs, but I’m not optimistic about that one.”

Khizanishvili’s agent has been in talks with bosses at Ewood Park over the last couple of weeks in the hope of securing a move for the former Rangers and Lokomotiv Tbilisi defender.

Royals have managed to keep club captain Ivar Ingimarsson, who has signed a new one-year deal, ending speculation surrounding his future. But their only other recognised centre-backs are Matt Mills and Alex Pearce.

And although utility players Brynjar Gunnarsson, who is also mulling over a new contract, and Kalifa Cisse can also play there if needed, that is far from ideal for a team pushing for promotion.

McDermott, though, insists: “Millsy is gaining experience all the time and that’s the same with Pearcey.

“They’re both still young so will get better and better with games. And Ivar’s new contract is great news for the club.”

Ingimarsson will face a fitness battle to start the 2010/11 Championship campaign as he will be out for at least three more months after undergoing surgery on an injured hamstring.

McDermott has also acted quickly in the transfer market to bring in Scunthorpe United left-back Marcus Williams to bolster his defence.
The full-back signed a three-year deal last week, rejecting an offer from rivals Sheffield United.

And McDermott is hoping to secure the services of at least one more defender. Andy Griffin is being lined up to continue at right-back after impressing for Royals while on loan from Stoke City last season.

McDermott said: “Our priority was to get a left-back. We’ve done that with Marcus and we’re hopeful of sorting out a deal for Andy Griffin.

“We’re talking to Stoke at the moment to try to get that one done as quickly as possible.”

Said it before and I'll say it again, big LOL at anyone who thinks we're going to spend substantial amounts of cash this summer (without shifting someone who is valuable). And let's face it would seem anything in excess of 0 is substantial for this club at the moment.

Pretty depressing really. There literally appears to be nothing in the coffers.

They told us last summer was so that wouldn't be the case.

You could easily see us going into the new season with Williams as the only signing.

No one expected anything silly, we should be looking to build on what we have.

Everyone agreed that 3 players in was min this summer after all the depatures. Still early days though, would be seriously tempted to try and cash in on Long/Fed, even though a few weeks ago I was keen to keep them.

Expect free transfers and loan signings at best unless anyone leaves for money.

I don't think there has been any talk of us spending substantial sums.

It wouldn;t surprise me if Zurab still comes. We want him, he wants to come and the hold up is based on Blackburn's starting point of wanting a fee for a player they have no use for ! if it is only a question of 100,000k then it's quite possible that a deal will be done in some form.

I don;t think it is at all surprising if we do focus on the value that will be around from free transfers, although you'd hope that once the book balancing has been done we'll have some cash to spend as well. As ever the fans will be hamstrung by not knowing how the figures stack up so we'll undoubtably split into the usual optimistic and pessimistic camps and both end up claiming to have been right come August !!

Your third line is what had me LOL'ing a bit. I seem to remember a similar comment prior to the 2005/6 season when we only had the Irish forwards and had got rid of a few players.

When has there ever been any money, officially? The club is never goiing to say "the cash is available", as they are trying to deals with other clubs that want to squeeze as much as possible out of us. Saying you have cash leads you ultimately to Joleon Lescott-style deals.

We've been broke every summer since time immemorial. Then we sign some players.

It's the best way to keep the transfer costs down.

No reason for the club to pay more than they think Zurab is worth, it's early in the window and there is still plenty of time to haggle.

did they?

i dont remember anyone saying we are selling these players so we have a big warchest next summer
we did it to reduce the wage bill so the club at least broke even. we continue to do so, and i imagine any incoming players will have to be payed for by anyone else we can offload from the fringes

And on the flip side still plenty of time for another club to snaffle him up from under our noses.

Don't you think that with the squad of 25 limit for the PL next season there will be a lot of non home grown players available - they may try for a fee now but, if they HAVE to get rid, a waiting game could produce a free transfer. Of course someone else may get in before that but if he wants to come to Reading we may still get him for nowt
