Who first took you to football?

by BR2 » 09 Jun 2010 12:38

Generally you hear of dads being the first person to take their son or daughter to football but I would be interested to find out if this is the case.
My dad never took me to a game although he was interested in football and played for a Reading league side at Coley.
My brother took me to my first game at Elm Park and much later on I took my son and daughter even though we lived away and they never developed an interest in Bournemouth (quite understandable).

My two mates,Roger and John, both were unfortunate to lose their dads at young ages so despite being Loyal Royals forever they didn't have the father/son relationship with football and in particular with RFC.
They have more than made up for it by introducing sons, nephews and grandchildren to our club.
So did dad first take you or was it somebody else?

My Dad in 1987 but only because my brother got free tickets from school. That's the only time he took us to football but to put it into perspective it was one of only a handfull of times he ever took us anywhere.

I stopped buying him tickets for games at the Madstad since he failed to turn up a championship game a few seasons back because he was playing bingo at bj's and couldn't be bothered. Now he just gets socks for Christmas. As a result he missed out on us winning the league, premiership etc etc.

My grandad took me to all three Edinburgh clubs before we moved to Reading. My Dad took me to Chelsea (once and once only I hasten to add) before I found my own way to EP.

My dad. He first took me to watch his team a few times (West Brom) in the hope that I would support them but it didn't work and he eventually took me to watch Reading at the age of 9 (he had first taken me to watch West Brom when I was 5).

My Granny used to take me, aged 4ish, to the "fag-end" of matches. Probably 3 or 4 times at a guess.

Then my Dad took me to a few between the ages of 7 to 12ish.

My dad did. Against Exeter in 1993-94 season.

Uwe Hartenberger scored the only goal in a 1-0 win. Not that i can remember much about it!!!

I was a big Liverpool fan as a kid and my Dad treated me to a trip to Anfield v Sheffield Wednesday for my 13th birthday. I think I saw three further games at Anfield before seeing the light and joining two Reading supporting friends for a home game against Barnsley to the back end of 96-97.

My Dad was a turnstile operator at Elm Park at various times throughout the early 70's.

I used to sit in the booth whilst he was taking the money, and then stand and wait on the Town end terracing for him to come back after handing in his bag of cash.

My little big brother (the one who isn't 50 today)!
Surprisingly he's taken me to three games, so I didn't embarrass him too much at the first one
And he even encouraged me to invade the pitch the last time... happy days (wonder what happened to that bit of Mad Stad pitch he stole?)
It's also his fault I've become a Nobber!

My Dad, the first time was against York in 1984. He worked at Lamport Gilbert and soon after 1984 the company moved to Wantage Road and he used to do the half day on Saturdays, drive back to Bracknell to get me and go all the back to Elm Park. I wanted to go all the time but we'd probably go about 10 times a season (there was also my younger brother and sister to take care of and they never got in to football).
I remember once a season he'd take me to work with him early on the saturday and i'd colour in or do homework, when he finished we'd get some chips on the Oxrord road and go to Prospect park to kick a ball around before going to the game, I loved it!
His Dad used to take him too, probably from about 1960.
We don't go so often now that I live in London but if we do we go together. I've probably seen 90% of my Reading games with him.

My dad took me for the first time in 1967, aged 3. We stood at the Tilehurst End with me sat on the wall at the front. As some of you will know, he passed away in March this year. Thank you, Dad, for introducing me to a lifetime of following RFC.

My son's first game was also as a three-year-old and we all know what happened at Wembley in '95...he has no direct memory of it as he spent the entire second half asleep on my lap...

My Mum.

Used to park over the flats and walk over prospect park.
Can of pop and a couple of sweets from the newsagent then into the tilehurst end where we usually met my uncle.

My first game was a boxing day around the age of 8. No idea who it was against but Elm Park was packed and the atmosphere was good.
Have been going back regularly but infrequently ever since. Often with my old dear still.

*soccerbase suggests it was a 3-1 home win against Aldershot*

Only went in the southstand a couple of times.
