Also creates the potential for a Brazil v Spain second round game, which opens up the draw a little.

Long way off mind but as people said, Chile looked pretty tasty and have a great chance to win the group now.

If Spain finishes second in the group, that would seriously fukk up the route to the final. Not that we need worry about it.
Come on Holland.

The Swiss are celebrating like they have won the World Cup. Still lots of horns and flag waving even after the game has long finished. Mass lol @ Pique for his awful defending, nice to see Spain revert back to normal service in World Cups at least

Ian Royal so LOLs @ England, Italy, France, Portugal and especially Spain.

Marvelous.

Why LOL @ England?

Fair play to the Swiss, hope they go on a roll now

Surely Spain won't be the 3rd consecutive reigning Euros winner to get eliminated from the group stages of the next WC?

France won Euro 2000 - eliminated in group stages WC 2002
Greece won Euro 2004 - eliminated in group stages WC 2006
Spain won Euro 2008 - ?????

Good job England didn't qualify for Euro 2008 after all 8)

Greece didn't even qualify for 2006, iirc.

But that's .... interesting.

It appears that Denmark also failed 1992/1994 ...

only 3 teams who have lost first match of WC have made it to KO stage since 32 team format began in WC98

Because we were a seed who didn't win their opening match perhaps?

A better question might be why Portugal, given I don't think they were the seeded team.

Good stat, and it sent me on a wiki journey.

Turkey in 2002
Ghana and Ukraine (who lost 4-0 in their opener) in 2006

Group is wide open now - could come down to goal difference...

Assuming Switzerland and Spain both beat Honduras, if Spain then beat Chile in their last game all three countries would have 6 points. If all the results are 1-0 too then I guess lots would be drawn.
