Harpers So Solid Crew
Dirk Gently People seem to be fixated with the idea that a "well-run club" must somehow also be a "rich club."

There are such financial pressures on a club that is relegated a level (just about any level, but the higher up the pyramid you go the greater the financial gap and the greater the financial pressures) that the reality is that you have to be a "well-run club" to stay solvent and in existence.

so how many clubs at a similar level to us have gone out of existance then???? From what I can see they are all surviving, and indeed existing.

so you want us to run things so close that we almost go out of busniess but not quite?

I think there is a debate as to if it is possible to run a succesful in the Championship, with our level of income, without outside investment.

I think it's certainly achievable but it obviously depends on what you define as successful.

Spending money doesn't mean you'll have success, but as I've said many times on here before spending that bit of money usually means you're buying a player who is perceived as less of a gamble and so is in greater demand.

Spending money should therefore increase your chances of being successful but it doesn't mean that a team assembled on low transfer fee's, freebies and loans can't challenge with the top spenders in this league.

I was at a seminar at the weekend on football finance, and Dr John Beech - who is the absolute expert on this topic - made the interesting point that the best way for a club to avoid financial trouble is to stay in the middle of the "most appropriate" division for them.

It's the going up and down divisions and the required changes to finances that really cause instability and financial damage.

Thaumagurist*

Nothing new really, it was mentioned in the EP too yesterday.

All I can infer from this is that the money generated from the sale wasn't considered large enough to re-invest. Which means it might not have been as much as the reported £650K.

you don't think it might have something to do with the club needing to recoup about £2.5m this summer, as previously reported..?

While I agree with the points, that's not what football is about. Yet the game, espicially at the top level seems so resistant to change. We can't have a wage cap at the top level, the goverment would never dare step in. Any challenge to the top clubs would just force a break away.

We're very lucky to have the youth set up that we do, there so many clubs that just seem to exist now days and as a football fan that's a worrying thing IMO.

Agreed, but that's the sad state we're in now - money is all important, and the financial gaps between the divisions are so great that moving between them is bound to cause financial schisms.

Added to that trying to compete with clubs who cheat, financially, but spending money they haven't got and no wonder the game is in such a mess, financially.

Royals director of football Nicky Hammond said:

“Marek showed flashes of class but found it hard to adapt.’’

That's fair.
