Rooney and Lampard have to be the most over-rated footballers this country has produced for many a year. Perhaps if they concentrated on their job rather than their profile and hype...

When things do not go well for Rooney, he loses all shape and discipline - coming too deep, shooting from all angles and distances, reckless challenges. That is why Fabio brought him off, because he could see him slowly unravelling.

It's really no coincidence we have had less ball in attack since Rooney went off. He was getting a lot of it, holding it up, interacting well with Gerrard and Defoe, far from a 'poor' performance.

6 minutes plus stoppages. Eeek.

Should have swapped Rooney for Crouch instead of Joe Cole. At least we would have had someone to hold the ball up when it gets there.

Milner man of the match for me. Brilliant last ditch block from Upson. A second goal would have had us finishing top of the group.

Yes, a scrappy 1-0 win against a glorified statelet is clearly the foundation you want before playing Germany, then Argentina.

Anyone bar Australia could win Group D.

I had an accumulator on group winners:

Uruguay
USA
Germany
Holland
Paraguay
Brazil
and Chile

Could well happen.

It wasn't perfect but that was far from scrappy. But for their keeper we may have had 3, he made a couple of top drawer saves, and we dominated three quarters of the game. A good performance and that IS a platform for round 2.

Agreed. He was impressive today, as were the entire back four. Lamps still flatters to deceive. Let us hope that the media does not go overboard again on that performance. Much sterner tests to come and we will have to start burying some of those chances.
