popbitch While boring countries like Germany and Spain
prepare for the World Cup with batteries of
sports scientists and computerised tactical
schemes, Diego Maradona is getting his Argentina
team in shape with methods more familiar to
six and seven year olds. The losers in a
recent training game were forced to line up, bend
over and endure their conquerors wellying shiny
footballs at their arses. Ole!

On the subject of Diego, some of the media coverage pre tournament about Maradona was unbelivably bad. Some of the guff included "they struggled to qualify" when it was his predecessor in charge Alfio Basile who put them in the mess Mardona rescued them from. Whilst it wasn't all plain sailing along the way (heavy defeat to Bolivia & home defeat to Brazil) they've looked better as the tournament has gone on and have a strength in depth up front like no other nation and the worrying thing is Messi is yet to really find the level we've seen him reach in previous years :| If he gets going they'll be very close to success again. His decision to omit Cambiasso & Zanetti also recieved many criticisms but those critics seen to have gone quiet all of a sudden.

Didn't post any predictions on this thread but I did back Brazil to win the tournament while I also tipped Chile as a dark horse. Not necessarily the dark horse but they played some lovely stuff in the tournament.

I gave Argentina no chance pre tournament and nothings changed.

Just look at Maradona on the touchline. The bloke is off his face. As soon as things go slightly against them they will just implode. And, you dont leave your best players at home and win the World Cup.

Anyone else notice that in the 2nd round all of the teams (bar one) that topped their group won are into the quarter finals? The exception was Ghana.

That was me  I really thought that the Germans would struggle using a very young team and should have thought the same about Ghana, who have a very young team based on their U20 world championship-winning squad. Both teams have been really impressive. Just goes to show that if you are good enough, you are old enough.

I have doubts about the Argies' back four - well, three centre backs - and think that Ozil, Klose and Muller can cause them problems. Any international team with two Newcastle defenders must be dodgy, right? If the Germans can keep Tevez, Higuain, Messi, Aguero, Milito, Palermo quiet...

Ghana to beat Uruguay. Asamoah Gyan has been one of the players of the tournament for me and I will stick with my dark horse.

I actually think it's Germany who are the one's with the weak defence. England showed on several occaisons that they can easily be got at, and I think the likes of Boateng and specifically Mertesacker will be vulnerable to the Argentina attack.

Hah! I don't know how anyone can justify smugness after that. No one, but no one, could honestly say their pre-match analysis was anywhere near the outcome.
