Dirk Gently Alternatively, HMRC may be looking at the big picture and playing the long game. They see that winning a ruling which sees the Football Creditors rule scrapped (or at least massively amended) will gain them a whole lot more money in the long term from all the other football club administrations that happen in future than they stand to win/lose from just Pompey.

Maybe, I am not sure on the figures though and of course I am biased.

If they were to liquidate then they would not be receiving the 24m owed or any future taxes from Pompey. Of that I am sure.

The football creditors rule imo is fundamentally wrong. I jhope they do get it changed

But if HMRC win the appeal ruling against this, when Hull go under next season HMRC stands to get a much greater share of that settlement, and ditto all the other clubs in future.

The FCR needs looking at, but the way football is currently structured the game would cease to function without it. And Pompey is a perfect example of why it (or an equivalent) is needed. For your home FA Cup tie v Birmingham, for instance, Pompey sold the tickets as it was home game, but 40% of the income went to Brum. It was well known that Pompey were on the verge of insolvency by then, so what was the incentive from Brum to turn up and play unless there was some guarantee that their share of teh gate money would be protected for them? That's a "football debt" just as much as a player's wages.

They aren't getting £24m anyway. They'll be getting £4.8m. From an unpaid tax bill of about £17m. Because Pompey are cheating scum. I think there's a fair chance of getting more than £4.8m by liquidating the club. More stuff to sell. And what ever they do get, they get within about 12 months and don't end up being owed another £10m in 5 years time.

You never know perhaps Cheatsmouth might learn from this brush with liquidation just like the learned from their last brush about 10 years ago

What's that? Get most of the debts written off then buy the club back for a pittance?

No chance they'll run up debts again with one of their previous spotless owners in charge.

Scum. Liquidate now, the administrator is obviously independent and squeeky clean too.

Transfer embargo lifted etc etc (the Premier Umbrellered ) Pompey are still very much in business next season

When you look at the way that the fringe teams (Salisbury City FC etc) have got punished for even lesser crimes

It drives an even bigger wedge between the real football fans and the suited (typically...........Chelsea corporate business) men (and Saint Brooking) that dictate where our money goes.

Disgraceful

Not Pompey related but I heard on the radio yesterday that Jimmy Bullard refused to join Celtic as they wouldn't pay him £75k a week. Instead he has returned to Hull and says he will stay there for the season.

Bullard's contract at Hull is £45k a week with a clause stating that after every 15 games he plays his weekly wage rises by £3k. Hull say they cannot afford to keep him let alone play him again as he is due a wage increase in 2 games time!

Are they likely to be forced to select him to play? If a player's not playing, but still raking in £45k p/w, are they going to kick up a stink about prevention of carrying out duties or some such?

Or is not selecting him for the foreseeable going to be seen as restriction/loss of earnings?

Could get messy.

Portsmouth face being under a transfer embargo until October if Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs appeal against the club's Company Voluntary Agreement.

Pompey administrator Andrew Andronikou had hoped to exit administration after reaching an agreement with the club's creditors.

HMRC have until Thursday's midnight deadline to lodge a protest, an appeal that would certainly delay the club's ability to bring in new players before the start of the Championship season.

Pompey would have to stay in administration until the appeal is heard, and the club would therefore remain under the transfer embargo due to Football League rules.

Irritant

"We believe the HMRC are going to appeal, that is the indication we are getting. It's going to be an irritant and, to put it simply, the embargo will stay for a longer period," Andronikou told The News.

"As long as there is an appeal process, the registration embargo will continue to be in force for the foreseeable future.

"However, we expect any appeal hearing to be held in October or November. Before then, if the squad is below 20, we can still bring in players, regardless of the embargo. That is allowed and is something we are looking at."

No, its says that the administrator thinks they'll appeal. Or rather that the administrator thinks he'll get his smug face in the media that little bit more if he says he thinks they'll appeal.

I really hope the rumours on the Portsmouth News are true...
Pompey face player crisis

Pompey's registration embargo will not be lifted until October at the very earliest.
That is the dreaded scenario if, as is now expected, HMRC appeal against the Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA).

And that would also surely mark the end of David James' Fratton Park career.

Tax chiefs have until midnight tomorrow to lodge their protest over the June 15 agreement between the Blues' creditors.

As it stands, an appeal has still to be registered by any disgruntled non-secured creditor.

However, Andrew Andronikou expects HMRC to act at the last minute in their dogged pursuit to recoup all of the money owed to them in unpaid bills – as revealed on our website portsmouth.co.uk yesterday.

As a consequence, the administrator believes a subsequent appeal hearing would not be held until October or November.

The knock-on effect would mean the Football League maintaining the transfer ban which has been in place on Pompey since October 15 last year.

That would see boss Steve Cotterill head into the new season unable to add to his already threadbare squad, with a host of players still set to be sold to ease crippling debts.

The Blues' only hope of bringing in new faces would be to ask for special dispensation from the Football League should their squad numbers dip below 20.

Pompey have already been given permission to add a goalkeeper to their ranks, with just Liam O'Brien signed on at present.

In the meantime, Andronikou is convinced the long-standing registration embargo is officially here to stay for the time being.

He told The News: 'We believe the HMRC are going to appeal, that is the indication we are getting.

'It's going to be an irritant and, to put it simply, the embargo will stay for a longer period.

'As long as there is an appeal process, the registration embargo will continue to be in force for the foreseeable future.

'However, we expect any appeal hearing to be held in October or November.

'Before then, if the squad is below 20, we can still bring in players, regardless of the embargo. That is allowed and is something we are looking at.'

Pompey squad numbers will be reduced over the next week.

James' future remains in doubt, especially considering he is waiting to see whether the CVA is appealed against before delivering his decision.

The departures of Nadir Belhadj and Papa Bouba Diop were today expected to be officially rubberstamped.

Tal Ben-Haim, Prince Boateng and John Utaka are also likely to be on their way soon.

In addition, the contracts of several youngsters Cotterill does not believe are good enough for first-team football are likely to be cancelled by mutual consent in the next week.

Andronikou added: 'There are a few players who have been around the club for a while we are looking to release.

'They earn £2,000-3,000 a week, so what is the point of having them here if they are not going to play for the club? There is no point whatsoever.'
