How do you know where the sensor is inside the ball? If it is stuck to the left it could trigger before the whole of the ball is over the line.

You would need 4 or 5 chips and a smart system to make sure they all trip the sensor.

The sensor would be in the goal, not the ball. In a brendy style brainstorming attempt I'd guess you mount the sensors inside the goal by one ball width and have something in the covering of the ball that the sensor can detect. Being round it doesn't matter which part of the ball is detected, but as soon as any part triggers the sensor you know the ball has crossed the line.

Simples (possibly !)

Ian Royal I'm pretty sure the sort of chip and sensor technology just suggested isn't exactly a ground breaking advance at the forefront of modern technological progress right now either.

But how is the sensor going to know exactly when the ball is played forward and where the attacker are at that precise moment? Fine! A sensor can tell us where everyone is one the pitch at any given moment but not what one is doing in relation to someone elses actions.

As long as it can tell the position of the ball relative to the goal line, posts and cross bar there isn't an issue in terms of any realistic proposals is there ?

This is in relation to offsides! :|

(Maybe I quoted the wrong post)

(Haven't read the whole thread so apologies if this has already been said)

The system that is in existence at the moment developed by Cairos has a chip embedded in the centre of the ball. An explanation of how it works can be found near the end of this page. With the chip in the centre of the ball you can get away with just one, as long as there is no way the chip can be dislodged.

the sensor knows when its been kicked. and by whom.when the ball reaches the offside player and he kicks it the beep goes off.

the only problem is the player who is offside, interfering with play but doesnt touch the ball

no, you just put the sensor in the centre of the ball, and offset the post sensors accordingly, so that when the chip crosses the sensors you know its over the line

How do they work out how much the ball changes shape when it bounces? It its twatted against the crossbar and goes down onto the pitch the ball will squash out of its round shape and be slightly wider thus if teh chip is working on a standard ball diameter the reading will be wrong.

Here's an idea then Brendy. How about, instead of the sensors in the ball emitting some sort of alarm signal they actually give out a 500 volt electric shock. That way everyone will know when a player in an off-side position recieves the ball because he will jump 6 feet into the air, go transparent like an X-ray (as they do in all good cartoons) and then collapse unconscious. The beauty of this idea is that you wouldn't cause any extra hold up because you'll be restarting with a free kick anyway and that gives the stretcher bearers time enough to get the unconcious, smouldering lump off the field.

Anyway, Lord Triesmann was right.

Anyone notice that the referees' kit of choice (allowing for colour clashes) is more than vaguely Spanish looking?

oxf*rd it, just go with one sniper to attend a random match in a division each week. He has 5 rubber bullets per match and is tasked with penalising injury feigning in particular, but any sort of cheating or bad behaviour.

It can also be applied to extreme incompetence in match officials and is a relatively low cost and resource light way of making players terrified of the consequences of cheating. Plus it adds comedy value to seeing a player go down like they've been shot, only to get up, wander off fine and then actually be shot.

The offside one is such a non starter I assumed no one with any sense was still discussing it (noting those who are still working on solutions I see i was right !!!)

Personally I think the way forward with offsides sees us fixing metal strips the width of the pitch to the feet of all players - possibly pianted in team colours. The linesmen would be able to see clearly where the players were in relation to each other at all times.

Much cheaper and no technology to go wrong.

Just do away with offside altogether.

Worked in hockey (very well !)

Would be well worth an experiment, would require managers and players to really think about the way the game is played.

Would also free up linesmen to concentrate on key goal line decisions !!!!
