PieEater How do you know where the sensor is inside the ball? If it is stuck to the left it could trigger before the whole of the ball is over the line.
You would need 4 or 5 chips and a smart system to make sure they all trip the sensor.

Sun TzuFlyingkiwiIan Royal I'm pretty sure the sort of chip and sensor technology just suggested isn't exactly a ground breaking advance at the forefront of modern technological progress right now either.
But how is the sensor going to know exactly when the ball is played forward and where the attacker are at that precise moment? Fine! A sensor can tell us where everyone is one the pitch at any given moment but not what one is doing in relation to someone elses actions.
As long as it can tell the position of the ball relative to the goal line, posts and cross bar there isn't an issue in terms of any realistic proposals is there ?

the sensor knows when its been kicked. and by whom.when the ball reaches the offside player and he kicks it the beep goes off.
the only problem is the player who is offside, interfering with play but doesnt touch the ball

This is in relation to offsides!
(Maybe I quoted the wrong post)

Here's an idea then Brendy. How about, instead of the sensors in the ball emitting some sort of alarm signal they actually give out a 500 volt electric shock. That way everyone will know when a player in an off-side position recieves the ball because he will jump 6 feet into the air, go transparent like an X-ray (as they do in all good cartoons) and then collapse unconscious. The beauty of this idea is that you wouldn't cause any extra hold up because you'll be restarting with a free kick anyway and that gives the stretcher bearers time enough to get the unconcious, smouldering lump off the field.
