Only possible decision really on the basis that
1. He's a good manager
2. There aren't too many credible options who would actually take the job
3. He can only have learned from this farce and will be highly motivated to restore his reputation
4. I suspect the real culprits may not be around too much longer
5. The FA couldn't afford to fire him

I'd have thought there must be a hundred other jobs where he'd be more able to restore his reputation, he's still going to be lumbered with the same bunch of clowns staying with England

His reputation before England was virtually unblemished. If he has damaged it with England then the only way he'll restore it is with England. It's a long-term task - he knows it, and it's comforting to think that one so experienced feels there's enough talent there to make a success of it. It's going to be very interesting to see which players survive the purge.

Bad decision, I have to say that this tournament showed him to be incompetent, but then the FA haven't the bottle or the money to get shot of him.

But this is the case with pratically all England managers since Alf Ramsey - most end up leaving the job with their reputation tarnished.
The job really is a poisoned chalice and managers should look beyond the inflated pay packet before accepting the job.

The FA were idiots to remove the break clause but I am OK with him staying. Remember that McLaren did not even quality for Euro 2008 with the same players so he's at least done better than that. He should forget about building a team for the next Euros and focus bringing through talent for the next WC.

(And perhaps with Roy going to Anfield the FA had few options left.)

no matter who's manager we will always be shit until the manager can choose his own players, instead of been given a list to choose from. As we have had 3 or 4 manager's and the squad has not changed much it is down to the players as they are a bunch of over paid dick's. we all blamed Steve McClaren,Sven-Göran Eriksson and now Fabio Capello and you could go on. drop the whole squad that’s everyone and start again and allow the manager to do it his way

Cause the Premier League is full of domestic, international class players who never get a chance.

Like, erm.

Still waiting for all the world class wingers Sven refused to drop Becks for to ever turn up and that was 4 years ago.

Good decision, and it will be really hard for him. I think he is the right man for the job, becuase it is a pig of a job.

There is no young hungry generation ready to replace Lampard, Gerrard and Terry, so what is the manager meant to do? We will all be really delighted if he picks a team containing younger players, but as soon as they lose, the media and the fans will be calling for the return of Lampard, Terry, and the others who have under-achieved since 2002.

That has to be one of the most bizarre ideas I've heard of !!

What makes you think the England team is selected that way ?

I guess it would explain how Phil Neville got so many caps.

The list is an idea dreamt up by the anti Beckham brigade as a reason to explain why he has so many caps. It's basic concept is that the fa gives the manager a list of commercially viable players that he must choose from in order to appease sponsors.

It's a stupid idea that doesn't explain why McClaren dropped Beckham for a year.
