It’s back – handbags_harris’s Eredivisie roundup (a week late, so you get the bonus of two weeks in one).
Round 1 – Champions FC Twente made an inauspicious start to the new season under their new manager, the former Belgian international goalkeeper Michel Preud’homme, with a 0-0 draw away at Roda JC. This allowed the likes of Ajax, Feyenoord and PSV to capitalize, however Ajax suffered a surprise 2-2 draw at FC Groningen having led 2-0. Mounir El Hamdaoui scored twice for the Amsterdammers on 50 and 61, however the Green and White Army bounced back with goals from Tim Matavz on 72 and a late equaliser from Nicklas Pederson (86).
PSV and Feyenoord capitalised however with respective 3-1 wins at sc Heerenveen and at home to FC Utrecht. PSV’s win came courtesy of two goals from Ola Toivonen (52 and 82) and a 91st minute clincher from Orlando Engelaar. Milan Kopic equalised for Heerenveen but PSV’s superior quality shone through eventually. Feyenoord suffered the ignominy of being behind at half time to FC Utrecht courtesy of a Ricky van Wolfswinkel strike on 12 minutes, however an Alje Schut own goal on 52 gave the Rotterdammers a huge boost and they went on to dominate, their dominance reaping further goals from Luigi Bruins on 64 and Leroy Fer on 75.
The newly promoted clubs opened up against each other at De Vijverberg, De Graafschap earning a comfortable win over Rotterdam’s third club, newly promoted Excelsior, by 3-0. Rydell Poepon opened the scoring on 8 minutes, and in the second half the Superboeren added to their tally with strikes from Muslu Nalbantoglu on the hour, and Steve de Ridder on 84.
In the other games, NEC earned a 1-0 home win over VVV-Venlo courtesy of Ramon Zomer’s 50th minute strike. Heracles of Almelo also opened their account against Willem II with a 3-0 win, Marko Vejiovic’s 3rd minute goal giving Heracles an excellent start. A late brace from Glynor Plet on 86 and 91 added gloss to the performance. Vitesse put one over ADO Den Haag, a 3-1 win at the GelreDome coming as a result of second half goals from Wiljan Pluim just after the break, and a brace of penalties from Lasse Nilsson. Lex Immers 15th minute strike opened the scoring for the men from The Hague but they were unable to hold on. Finally, 2008/2009 champions AZ were held 1-1 at NAC Breda. Erik Falkenburg opened the scoring for the Alkmaar club, however Matthew Amoah’s equalizer 10 minutes from time denied them an opening day win.

Round 2 – Ajax opened their account at home with a shaky 4-2 victory over Vitesse. Davy Pröpper shocked the Amsterdammers into action with a 26th minute opener only for Jan Wertonghen to equalize on 37. Gregory van der Wiel quickly gave Ajax the lead on 40, however Marco van Ginkel equalized on the stroke of half time. Ajax stepped up the pace in the second half and scored two unanswered goals to wrap the points up through Siem de Jong on 47 and Vurnon Anita on 58.
PSV brought newly promoted De Graafschap back down to earth with a resounding thud at the Philips Stadion, scoring 6 unanswered goals. De Graafschap can consider the scoreline to be somewhat excessive however as they had to play 86 minutes with 10 men after Purrel Fränkel was sent off for a professional foul, Balázs Dzsudzsák opening the scoring from the resulting penalty kick. Ola Toivonen scored a hat-trick before the hour (25, 46, 55) before being replaced job done. Nordin Amrabat (80) and Ibrahim Afellay (84) put a somewhat flattering look to the score.
Feyenoord suffered a shock 3-2 defeat at friendly neighbours Excelsior courtesy of a last minute winner from Guyon Fernandez. Fernandez had previously given Excelsior the lead on the half hour mark only for Ronald Vlaar to equalise 4 minutes from half time. Miquel Nelom gave Feyenoord the lead on 71, however the Kralingers had other ideas than to let their feeder club walk away with three points and Daan Bovenberg quickly equalised. Fernandez then pounced on a 93rd minute rebound to hand Excelsior a famous win.
Champions FC Twente once again failed in front of goal with another goalless stalemate, this time at home to sc Heerenveen, and previous champions AZ also failed to win again with a 1-1 home draw against FC Groningen, Maarten Martens sparing Alkmaar’s blushes with an 87th minute equaliser, cancelling out Tim Sparv’s 76th minute opener.
In the other games, VVV-Venlo opened their account with a 1-0 home win over Heracles Almelo, Ruud Boymans’ 11th minute goal proving the difference between the sides. Willem II and NEC put in an early contender for most entertaining game of the season, NEC running out 5-3 winners at the Koning Willem II Stadion. Juha Hakola put the home side ahead early on (6), only for Lasse Schöne to equalise on 20. Frank Demouge restored the Tricolores lead, a lead they held until 10 minutes into the 2nd half, Björn Veleminckx scoring from the spot to equalise once again and from then on Willem II collapsed. Vleminckx gave NEC the lead for the first time on 72, a lead they were not to relinquish, and Bas Sibum doubled the advantage 6 minutes later. Andreas Lasnik scored from the spot to put pressure on the men from Nijmegen, however Vleminckx completed the scoring and his hat-trick on 94 to give the points to NEC. FC Utrecht reversed their 3-1 defeat at de Kuip with their own 3-1 win over 9-man NAC Breda at Stadion Galgenwaard. Ricky van Wolfswinkel opened the scoring for Utrecht on 13, Matthew Amoah equalising on 25. Dries Martens scored right after half time to restore the lead, and Jens Janse was then sent off on 68 for a second booking for NAC. An 80th minute penalty from van Wolfswinkel secured the points after Danny Gorter was sent off for the penalty offence. Finally, ADO Den Haag suffered their 2nd 3-1 reverse, this time at home to Roda JC. Once again they took the lead early o, this time through Frantisek Kubik on 4 minutes. Mads Junker quickly equalised from the penalty spot on 9, and this was quickly followed up 3 with Laurent Delorge’s 12th minute strike. Despite ADO’s best efforts, Jimmy Hempte’s 70th minute effort clinched the points in a bad-tempered game which rendered 5 bookings to each team.
