Alex McCarthy

Alex McCarthy is in the England U21 squad to play Uzbekistan next week at Ashton Gate. He is the only non Premiership player in the squad.

Will he be first choice? I think he has a bright future ahead of him and although it's already been debated on other occasions over the Summer, I rate him as our best young reserve keeper

Well I think the guy should get a massive pat on the back and congratulations....its no mean feat to get into the international set-up, and Alex has done himself, and the club, very proud

Given that all of our club's international successes have been through foreign clubs (correct me if Im wrong there!) ...its great for Reading to have a player recognised and selected for England at this level

...sorry remembered Nathan Tyson ! but still that was some time ago so lets still celebrate!

Nicky Shorey played twice for England. That's pretty good.

This isn't McCarthy's first call up to the Under 21's.

Fielding is absolute gash as well, maybe a good chance for Alex to play.

so both Andersen and McCarthy tied down on deals until 2013, interesting!

Will Torquay away be Ben Hamer's last appearance or do we have an eye on selling these two for good money?

Fielding has been called up to replace Ben Foster apparently. Playing tonight and will be reserve tomorrow.

He may be absolute gash - I don't know - but he is certainly no longer under 21!! He was 22 four months ago! What are the rules for being selected to play for the U21 side then? I know there is latitude allowed but ...

I believe if you are 21 at the start of the qualifying campaign you can play for the next 2 years. Milner for example was 23 in the last U21 Championship.

As we just signed him on loan how does rate vs Hamer and Anderson?

Not as good yet, but potentially better than both. He is only 20 and hopefully will go far, but is behind Hamer and Andersen in the pecking order at the moment.
Don't you ever buy your own goalkeepers?

Better than both IMO although this is based on the 2 pre-season friendlies I saw McCarthy & Anderson play

Aren't you the one who described Andersen as absolute gash?

So, in summary, we have 4 decent keepers and 1 decent Centre back

Can we please cash in on the overrated Federici? Hamer is a very good keeper by the way, hes just been forgotten about a bit with Federici being available for every game last season.
