Was the "offside" player behind the ball? I've only seen the tv pics but I have a feeling he may have been, if so - no offside.

But he's level there so no offside anyway.

Yep.

As discussed on the refwatch thread. Got to the right outcome, but there's no way the ref could see the ball-player and the scorer at the same time, so he's given it for the wrong reason.

The fact the ball went backwards by their player means the goal scorer could have been stood on the goal line and not been offside. When it hit the Reading man and went towards our goal it obviously couldn't have been offside.

He looks just offside there, so no goal. The player was gaining an advantage, which is that case where the ball deflects to a player from the goalie, post or opponent.

I seriously can't find anything in the rules about a backwards pass not being offside - the only reference being that if the player is behind the ball he can't be offside. This would mean that the pass would be backwards in most cases, but in this case the "offside" player was in front of the ball.

He was played onside by at least one Reading defender though.

Have a look at the rules. You have the internet. It is magic: you type in offside rule football laws and it gives you the answer.

Taken from FIFA.com

Offside position
It is not an offence in itself to be in an offside position.
A player is in an offside position if:
• he is nearer to his opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the
second-last opponent
A player is not in an offside position if:
• he is in his own half of the fi eld of play or
• he is level with the second-last opponent or
• he is level with the last two opponents
Offence
A player in an offside position is only penalised if, at the moment the ball
touches or is played by one of his team, he is, in the opinion of the referee,
involved in active play by:
• interfering with play or
• interfering with an opponent or
• gaining an advantage by being in that position
No offence
There is no offside offence if a player receives the ball directly from:
• a goal kick
• a throw-in
• a corner kick

To be offside the ball has to go forward....trust me, i'm a ref :D

It cannot be called if the offensive players are on their own side of the field or if the ball is passed backward anywhere on the field. Nor is it valid on a throw-in, goal kick, or corner kick.

Well, you'd better get FIFA to change their own laws document on their own website then.

If, just say the player was in an offside position, when the matey tried cutting the ball back it wasn't intended for him, nor was it going to him......when it deflected off a Reading player 'forward' there is no way he would be offside due to the fact (1) it came off a Reading player last - (2) he wasn't "active" in the initial phase when the cut back was going to the edge of the box

Deflections don't count, otherwise a million goals ruled out around the world would have stood.

Its covered under the not gaining an advantage rule.........if i play the ball backwards then if the attacker has to then run away from the goal to collect it, he's not gaining an advantage.

His pass was going back to the edge of the box before Griffin(?) stuck his foot out and sent it flying into the 6 yard box....

IF his pass was going towards the matey who scored and took a deflection then i agree as the offside is called as soon as the ball leaves the players foot, not when the other player receives the ball.
