Schards#2 TBF, Portsmouth business model gave them a plethora of internationals, an F A Cup win, a second cup final and european football, after which they crashed and were left in he championship with a threadbare squad.

Reading's model brought relegation and a few years in the championship culminating this season with us still in the championship and with a threadbare squad.

A cynic could ask which is the more successful model.

Absolutely. Considering how much success it brought them it's difficult to understand how anyone could begrudge them the paltry £1.48 each that it's cost us taxpayers. Really, you could scarcely begin to run even the smallest hospital on that sort of money.

Terminal Boardom Perhaps if the daft old coot stopped spouting BR style BS, like being determined to reach the Premier League, and instead preached caution and consolidation, he would not get the stick and abuse that he gets on here. If BMcD manages to keep us in the Championship, he will have done a brilliant job.

He does he talks about cutting the cloth and he gets crucified for it. He can't win.

This is the whole point. The daft old coot says one thing then contradicts himself a few days later. He needs to learn to STFU.

sandman If only we spent money the way Portsmouth did now there is a well run club. Damn you Madejski damn you to hell ya B@stard.

A.Mong, Reading

You are a mong. Look at the state of the finances of most of the other clubs in the division - generally worse off than us - and yet they can still find enough money to bring in the players they NEED to compete. Nobody's asking for 3 quality players on big money and that we should be spending like qpr or bristol city...

One decent player for a reasonable amount of money on wages we could afford last season would do - i.e. Zurab Khizanishvili - would fill a massive HOLE in a thin squad.

Last season we not only had someone in on loan (O'Dea or Zurab) but we had Cisse as well. Going in to a season with 2 fit centre backs - one of whom is shall we say unproven - that's not what I call a good business plan - that's what I call a GAMBLE. McD did a great job last year but in this division no club should feel it's untouchable when it comes to being relegated - a lesson you would have thought the might have taken on board from last year?

And I assume we'll have even less cash next year? We had a long cup run with high gates against Prem opposition - might not happen this year.

On top of that they'll probably decide to ditch Ivar and Bryn next year and maybe sell the Sig? I know he said he wants to stay but if we have a mediocre season he might change his mind. They'll accept any decent offer and we'll get told that the money has to go to service the club's debts?

Not going to throw my toys out of the pram just yet - for all we know they are working on a couple of deals right now. I'll try to reserve judgement until the window closes difficult as that might be!

Have you considered that being determined to reach the Premier League (something he was saying 10 years ago - look what happened, we did.) might possibly refer to a long term strategy that could envolve short term risk, but on the right terms. Not just pumping money at it season after season until it work, or we go down the pan?

It's not just a case of trying for it this season and winning. You have to factor in that even if you do take a risk you've really got a less than 50-50 chance of pulling it off given the number of teams able to compete for promotion at this level. And that raising the expectation by spending big in one season means the ever so blinkered and short memoried fans will expect it every season.

If we go down, McDermott will have done a fairly poor job. If we go up McDermott will have worked wonders. If he does the job he ought to, we'll be there or thereabouts to be in a similar position of needing to decide whether to bide our time and see what happens or go for it next season.

As far as I'm aware the football league isn't desolving anytime soon, there's no real rush. The longer we stay where we are the greater the chance of going up in future. The more risk we take now the greater the chance that we'll have to deal with financial difficulties and a relegation then get promoted twice to be in the Premier League.

Injuries might well force JM's hand so we'll see. If not we just have to pray Ivar stays fit!

Another rant from the fickles. Do you think it's their money they're spending? Like you say they don't have it so where do you think it's coming from the tooth fairy, Santa? The club do appear to be making a gamble but just because they put something out to the wider world doesn't mean it's true. A few days before Griff signed McD said there was no chance of it happening and hey presto he signs.

Until the window shuts I wouldn't rule anything out.

I think the point is: our Chairman was interviewed a week ago and he said (I quote) "I am desperate to get back in the Premiership".

We now have 1 fit centre back (Alex Pearce  ) and we are apparently not looking to get any new players in.

It wouldn't take a huge amount of cash to bring in an experienced (unwanted at his current club) CB.

"I'm desperate to get back in the Premiership...."
"We need to cut our cloth...."

Please just make your mind up one way or the other.
Please stop bullshitting us. We're not stupid (Well, I am, but must of us aren't).

I'm not annoyed... yet. But I have to admit I feel like I can see the way this club is headed for the forseeable future - Mr Madejski (who has, of course done a lot and spent a lot) has clearly decided he wants to limit his losses and wait for a buyer and hope that maybe we can get promoted on the cheap. McD doing so well in the second half of the season has only helped to convince him that it is possible and that Brian is football's answer to Star Trek's Mr Scott - a mirace worker.

Now the fact that that's the way he wants to play it is fine - it's his club and his prerogative - but if it stifles the clubs ability to compete by making it difficult for the manager to put together a full and balanced squad - that in my opinion would be something worth a moan - that's not fickle - that's just being worried about the future of your football club - which is of course partly based on finances but also based on what happens on the pitch as well - if you get relegated to league one because you didn't spend a bit of extra cash on one extra centre back that seems to me like a bad plan.

We'll see.

Ianroyal - i don't mean to be pessemistic but relegation ought to be in the back of the minds of at least half of the division - i'm not bothered about mounting a promotion charge - i'm worried about a serious weakness in our squad depth in terms of central defenders and the fact that a couple of injuries could leave us with a really hotch potch makeshift back four.

Funny, but true. Who cares about morale high ground when you reap those rewards.

But is it more than moral high ground ?
If the judge had been having a bad day last week, Pompey likely wouldn't exist any more.
Would you take a few years of glory at the expense of not having a club to support any more ?

£30 million X 2

£11 million X 2

£15 million

wages saved on getting rid of our top earners, probably another £5 million plus a year

...you do the sums...do you really think we wouldn't have any money spare to pick up Zurab and one or two more if Madejski hadn't been taking back out of the club? We weren't spending mega money for Alan Bennett, Ulysees De La Cruz and all the other shit players on shit wages Coppell brought in when we went up, that's for sure. We also got some pretty decent gates both years since we went down in addition to selling out every week in the Prem.

I don't think that anyone is suggesting in the slightest that we spunk millions on all sorts of players. The issue as I see it is that the daft old coot says we have to save £4m somehow. He then says he is determined to get into the Premier League. BMcD then says there is no money for new players - whether they are loan or permanent but some may be on the way. As I see it, the club is doing a shit job in setting expectations for the supporters.

Buffoon, that's a lot more sophisticated than your usual insults. As regards Griff He said we were trying but said it was extremely unlikely to happen as there was no money (sound familliar?).

I would have liked us to spend more money and stayed in the Prem but not at the expense of the future of the club I love. Perhaps we should of gambled our future on a player a reactionary fcuktard like yourself wanted. Like it or not established Prem players don't usually go to clubs like Reading. Plus, the Premier League don't just let you walk into the league without a a stadium that meets certain requirements and that costs money also.

I've no idea if Madejski has taken money out of the club and I wouldn't like to speculate for fear of making an injection into the clubs finances myself.

I'm sure Zurab wouldn't ask for massive wages as he probably got that Bentley out of thin air and I'm sure his agent is happy to waive any fee he might receive from the transfer.

Lastly, you are an Oxygen thief. Now, why don't you go find Rodgers and beg him to give your relationship another try you little Fcukwit.

Stoke? Maybe.

Anyway I'm happy to shelve this debate until the end of the transfer window, but I'll be surprised if we sign anyone - unless Zurab can't find a club and persuades Blackburn to have pity on him and release him because he'll never play... or perhaps let him go on loan to us for a small fee?

Goodnight.

Pretty poor, I give you a 0/10 for grammar, as you 'should've' realise how to abbreviate 'should have' properly.

Once I move on from the grammar there's really little substance to your debate as Stoke, Wolves, Bolton, Wigan and several other promoted clubs (many of which with lower average gates than ourselves as you can see) have managed to attract such established Premiership players so that blows you out of the water.

Please bring me the quote where McDermott said Griffin was 'extremely unlikely' to sign as I don't believe I read that particular headline...

You totally miss the point if you think I'm a 'reactionary f*cktard' and wanted us to put the club at risk by spunking money up the wall...just a few select signings would have been nice, is that too much to ask? I don't see any of the clubs I've mentioned, West Brom, Birmingham or many others going out of business...I've been a season ticket holder for years from when we were at the back end of League 1 so if I'm supposed to be 'reactionary' I clearly don't react that quickly.

If you honestly can't see that the funds coming into the club and the savings we made through Madejski's cost cutting exercises have been exhausted by stadium improvements, Shane Long's wages and one or two cheap signings then you obviously did maths on the sunshine bus.

Calling me an 'oxygen thief', attempting to label me a homosexual and throwing your toys out of the pram won't change that fact that you're a moron and above all, wrong.
