Awesome player and someone England really miss in their midfield

Do we have anyone who is on his wavelength coming through the ranks?

Unfortunately Beckham is the only player of his generation to genuinely value playing for England above his club. Scholes doesn't, and bottled it a long time ago.

And no, there isn't a new Scholes coming through.

Wilshere is the closest but won't get anywhere near Scholes's level

Shits over all other English midfielders. Maybe apart from Gerrard on his day.

Scholes was an awesome little player who was probably under valued by many purely because he didn't covet the media attention and praise that others have done over the years.

He was pretty average for long spells last season though, so although he still has exceptional games in him they'll be few and far between (relatively speaking) this season, as they were last season when he was distinctly average at times.

England missed him, but he couldn't hack it and found tournaments hard to deal with by the sounds of it. He was also moved about too much to suit other players (sound familiar) and so we probably didn't see the best of him for England.

I'm quite hopeful that Wilshire comes close to replacing him, but in terms of ability that's a big ask.

He retired early as he was being shifted around to accomodate Lampard, Gerrard and, to a lesser extent, Beckham.

Euro 2004 saw him playing wide left in some games.

If he's that good why hasn't he got many personal awards? Where are his nominations for World Football of the Year etc?

You can be very, very good, and not be World Footballer of the Year?

How can he be thought of as better than Lampard then? Lampard has more individual accolades than Scholes

I would have been embarrassed to be a Newcastle fan last night. Scholes is good but they made him look brilliant.

Newcastle gave him so much space and time on the ball it was no wonder he was able to pick out a few good passes.

On another note, LOL at Barton's Chuckle Brother moustache

cos what he does, isn't picked up by the TV/Media.......his vision, movement, passing are almost ninja like and go un-noticed but would be sorely missed when he retires

The description 'ninja-like' should really get more airing in football punditry.

Scholes wouldn't be as good if he was putting in the extra games and training that being an international requires. At his age he benefits more from the extra rest. Same for Giggs. Both are excellent players who've played on for an extra couple of years because they quit internatonal football. You could argue that Scholes wasn't re-producing his club form for England hence he was shifted around a bit.

Newcastle just gave him too much space last night when they should really have got Barton or Smith to man-mark him after he started running the game. Although that does take away from his excellent movement that means he gets the ball with time and space to look up and pick a pass.

I think Zidane once said that Paul Scholes was the best player he had ever played against. That indeed is some praise.

All of his fellow prefessionals seem to really rate Scholes though. I remember Roy Keane talking him up big-style as well, especially about his 'nasty side'.

EDIT: Found the Zidane quote;
Zinidine Zidane "My toughest opponent? Scholes of Manchester. He is the complete midfielder. Scholes is undoubtedly the greatest midfielder of his generation."

Some praise indeed, but he's not even won the players player of the year in the Premierleague?
