Mike Hunt
Sarah Star Haven't even got the means to get ZK on loan, apparently. :(

I really oxf*rd hope that they are playing with us... We need a CB - and oxf*rd now!

Obviously the club have given up on Khiz. That does not mean we are not going to get another CB though. We can but hope.

Maybe Sir John should claim all his loans back, the club should go into administration, pay everyone they owe money to 20p of every £1 they owe, Sir John can then refund the club and we'd have more money to buy ZK, Bertrand etc. Wonder if he's ever thought of doing that?

Kitson12 How can we not have the means and yet Cardiff, who are supposedly in a world of financial trouble, have the means to get Craig Bellamy?

They might not. The league want proof Cardiff can pay before the register Craig Bellamy

The same way Cardiff got into trouble presumably... by spending way beyond their means. As I think Dirk has said elsewhere, if you owe £2m you can't pay, what difference does it make if you increase it to £20m. You still can't pay it, but it might allow you enough success to keep falling forward without quite landing flat on your face just yet.

Royals rule out stopper return
Royals boss adamant there are no funds to bolster squad

Last updated: 21st August 2010
Royals rule out stopper return

Reading manager Brian McDermott insists the club are not in the financial position to bring Zurab Khizanishvili back to the Madejski Stadium.

Blackburn defender Khizanishvili spent time on loan with the Royals last season, notching up 15 appearances for the Championship club.

With stoppers Ivar Ingimarsson and Matt Mills currently sidelined due to injury, Khizanishvili could have provided a useful boost at centre-back.

But McDermott insists Reading, who have not received any Premier League parachute payments this season, do not have the funds to snap up the Georgia international.

When questioned over the chances of re-signing the 28-year-old stopper, McDermott told Reading's official website: "We haven't got the means to do that."

And McDermott also stood firm against the suggestion of a possible loan deal, adding: "Once again, we haven't got the means to do that."

These comments that we havent got the means to get anyone in rather kills the " well run club" statement ?? if we were that well run we would have finance available, wouldn't we ???

Well run means not spending what you don't have. As we aren't spending because we don't have money that makes us fairly well run. Well run and successful are not necessarily the same thing.

Do we have creditors threatening us with winding up orders or liquidation? No
Are we in danger of going out of business? No
Are we looking like relegation is certain and possibly followed by further relegation? No

We're in a normal position for most championship clubs. Small chance of promotion, small chance of relegation. We bide our time for a bit until circumstances allow for us to make a push that increases our chances of going up significantly, without massively increasing our chances of financial oblivion or relegation if we fail.

Well run businesses still make use of finance though. Imagine trying to live your life without a mortgage because you want your life "well run".

Investment usually brings success. Spending foolishly brings losses.

Finance for football clubs is probably either next to impossible to get, or hugely expensive. Clubs are a shocking risk and why would someone lend a million if there would good odds they'd have to fight to even get £200,00 back.

On the other hand I see the point that you cannot run a business without investment, I guess we've invested in areas other than transfer fees this summer.

What? All £11 million or whatever it was? Hardly a tight ship and cloth cutting exercise last season then was it! :|

Squad of 35 players with salaries ranging from £5k a week to £20k a week, plus the compensation to Watford for Rodgers and then his severance....that £11m soon disappears...before you add in things like the running costs on matchdays and all the other behind the scenes staff, minus the loss of sponsors, matchday busines etc...I'd say it would seem we budgeted quite well..

Likewise, this season we have a budget in place to see us right come May next year regardless of where we are in the league, unlike some teams who are spending a fortune and relying on fans to buy replica merchandise to help balance the books!!!

It does make me laugh that some fans think we can't be well run because we don't have money to spend. That is the biggest sign that we are well run as it shows we know our financial position and that the costs need cutting.

Are you deliberately not engaging your brain?

Our wage budget in the Premier League when we were relegated was about £33m
40% reduction of £33m is £19.8m. Call it a further 30% reduction for the next season, although I personally think that's very overestimated, and you still have a wage budget of almost £14m.

So yes, we could have run a tight ship and cut a lot of cloth and still have all of the parachute payment taken up by wages. Why do you think they exist!?
