JoebyRFC I recon that Madejski doesn't want the hassle of being a premier league chairman again. He doesn't want to take any risks with his money to get us into the Prem, where he will then make back all his money. And to me a chairman shouldn't be like that, obviously he has the right to make sure all the fee's a paid, but if you are chairman of a football club your job is to do your up most to make your team better by supplying the support to your manager.

crack on, get your pocket money out, and take the job yourself then

In order to be the best run club in the country something has to give. If by scrimping and scraping we still manage to get into the Prem, all well and good - but it's not really Mr Mad's aim, despite his rhetoric.

Royal Lady We should have asked Chelsea for first dibs on Bertrand if they were going to put him out on loan again - but I rather suspect the club didn't want to pay the money, so thought getting Williams in was a better bet. How wrong they were - but we could all have told them that.

As bad as Williams currently looks, it was probably the right decision by the club to get in a first team left back over the summer. There was little chance that we'd get Bertrand back and it'll be interesting to see if he stays the whole season at Forest or moves on in January after his initial loan expires.

There's no doubting that Bertrand is a better player, but we couldn't just stand around and not get a left back in on the off chance they let us keep Bertrand for a season.

but having got one for free, why couldn't we then also get Bertrand in when he became available - I bet he'd have wanted to come here - knowing the players, the set up etc. It's not like we're awash with other left backs as it is.

He had a shocker last night. The Northampton wingers were all over him.

The club probably don't want to pay three people to do one person's job. Bertrand might have wanted to come back and he might not; we'll never know now. Maybe Williams will start to show the form that convinced McDermott sign him in the first place. I can't remember a single player who wasn't moaned about on here shortly after signing.

££££££££££££££

Do you really need to ask that question?

It would also be a pretty damning verdict on a managers new signing and a pretty poor piece of man management to bring in a replacement before the new guy had even played!

Not really - like I said, we're not awash with left backs as is it - could have told Williams from the off that they might also be getting Bertrand back, so may not be first choice.

I know it's down to money - if we thought/knew we weren't getting Bertrand back, we should have spent some on a better replacement.

I'd have presumed that McDermott kind of believed he would be better than he has been so far...

Not all signings come good, and he may well have been the best we could afford!

You get what you pay for with these things. Champonship is hardly awash with great left backs, esp ones we could afford.

Williams is young, he's cheap and we'll prob be able to sell him on for a small profit somewhere down the line.

I was slaughtered for suggesting we should of been back in for Bertrand, because we had Williams.

Say no more.

This isn't fantasy football, it's real life. Williams is already being paid to do that job, why would the company bring in somebody else to do it for him?

Good to see you've written the lad off already though, says more about you than it does about him tbf.

It's not a case of the company bringing in somebody else to to the job for him. It is a case of having enough competition and cover though.

I don't think we had the funds or the opportunity to gamble on Bertrand being available though and we had to go out and get a left back. It's a shame the one we got seems, so far, to be below the required standard.

I do wonder how long the club can afford to wait for Armstrong to get fit and therefore relying on Williams coming good though.

Read what he said 'it is the chairman's job to supply support to the manager' just like the chairman of any other business. That doesn't mean that he has to personally provide the funds but he does have to work his *rse off (rather than talking it off) to create an environment whereby those funds are forthcoming. IMO Madjeski 2010 is proving to be a very poor chairman of the business that is RFC.

Williams hasn't been very good thus far, however the guy is going to take time to settle into the team and our method of playing. He had a couple of good bursts going forward yesterday and could/should have scored vs Forest on Saturday.

Defensively, I'm never filled with confidence by a full back who spends the majority of his time running towards his own goal but I think he has it in him to improve.

End of the day, we've been blessed with a solid left back pretty much continuously since 2001 with Shorey, Armstrong and Bertrand. He's got big boots to fill and I doubt if many would've been able to fill them....

Judge him at Xmas, although if this was a boxing match it'd be looking like it's going to end as a 7th round KO
