Director Of Football Nick Hammond said, "We're delighted to have secured this deal, we've got ourselves a player of great quality and versatility. He's had enormous success in his career and still has a real hunger and desire for the game. I know he'll be good for the team and the dressing room as well."

Boss Brian McDermott added, "He's got great experience, a wonderful left foot and he's another important addition in what we are trying to do here. Carlisle fought very hard to keep him, he was a main player for them and we're very pleased he has signed."

Harte told our online TV station Reading FC Player, "I'm chuffed to be here, it's happened very quickly and I'm really looking to meeting the lads now that I've been given the opportunity to come to a fantastic club.

"I'm 33, still hungry and every time I cross that white line I give 100%. Hopefully I can put some good performances in. It's my birthday today and it's the best present I could have wished for, I'm really looking forward to getting started."

Well I'm pleased. It's Chris Makin MK2, with the same doubters moaning about this signing too. He's reliable and experienced, a good set-piece taker and leader. Good competition for Williams.

Welcome to the club!

Woo.

oxf*rd.

Hoo.

Seriously, he'll probably be an improvement on Williams. But that really only sums up what a poor signing Williams currently appears to be (I'll hedge my bets - he's young and may come good). He'll also help replace Sigurdsson's threat from set pieces.

But what does it matter when the goalscoring burden is now shared among Hunt, Long and Church?

Not saying that he won't do a job, but today has just been a complete fcuking let down. I wasn't that pissed off that we sold Gylfi, as I was sure it would free up the money to bring in a decent £1m+ striker at the very least. I'm just completely fed up.

Between the lines (reading) I'm guessing that the Gylfi sale has been known about for a coupla weeks
and Kish and Harte knew where they were going to be playing this season..

"DEFENDER STAYING PUT"
Posted on: Fri 20 Aug 2010

Carlisle United have today reached an agreement with defender Ian Harte on a one-year contract extension that will keep him at Brunton Park until the summer of 2012, with an option to extend until the end of the following season.

The former-Republic of Ireland star, 33 at the end of this month, put pen-to-paper on a two-year deal in June 2009 following a successful spell with the Cumbrians toward the end of the 2008/09 season.

He missed just one game last season and has an impressive haul of 21 goals in 65 appearances for the Cumbrians.

Harte started his career at Leeds and made over 275 appearances during his time at Elland Road.

He also had spells with Levante and Sunderland and made over 60 outings for the Republic of Ireland between 1996 and 2007.

Manager Greg Abbott said: "Ian has been fantastic for us since he signed and I am delighted that this is now done and dusted.

"His reading of the game is second to none and he has been a big part of the overall improvement that we have seen on and off the pitch at this club.

"We all know about his goals, and he is a real threat with set pieces and whenever he gets forward, but his all-round game sets a real example to the rest of the players in the squad.

"Doing this now means that Ian can really concentrate on his football as we all look to continue our forward momentum."

Looking toward a broader role for a player who is immediately recognisable, managing director John Nixon explained: "This is one that we wanted to complete as quickly as possible because Ian is rightly regarded as a model professional.

"His performances on the pitch are exactly what you would expect from a player who has played at the highest levels, and we have asked him to get the message out to our local community, particularly to children and schools, about the amount of hard work and dedication that goes into achieving something like that.

I decided to judge Gylfi's sale upon how much we used the money to invest in the squad.

So far at least £6mill received. Kish on loan and Harte for 50k. At max on 10k a week more combined than Siggy - 500k for the year.

I was one of the defenders of JM but today is going to change my opinion unless we get the goalscorer we need in the next 30 minutes.
