Let me get this straight. We have sold our best and most creative player leading goal scorer dead ball specialist. And with the money we have bought in a 33 year old left back from Carlisle United? I have to say that is great business well done to Hammond, BM and SJM hope you spend your cut wisely.

Unidisclosed Fee

by Jackson Corner » 01 Sep 2010 03:20

Can someone please tell me what this is all about? It seems the club are happy to tell us that we have sold our star assett for six million. But don't want to tell us how much they have wasted on old codgers like Griffin and Harte? What ever it was on Harte it was to much. Are these figures ever revealed at another point in the season?

Harte was 50,000.

Can hardly complain, that's almost a free transfer.

Every transfer I can remember, in or out, involving Reading FC has been officially "undisclosed". Where have the club said anything about 6m? They said it was a club record, i.e. more than Doyle.

£6.5 for any player at this level is an incredible digit, and for a 19 year old even more so. Reading have profited immensely.

As for Harte, I'm glad we signed SOMEONE, you would be crying a lot more had Reading signed no-one whatsoever. Besides, I expect when Reading signed Shorey from Orient everyone said the same thing, who the fcuk's this? Albeit, he was at least 10 years younger but nonetheless... Harte's hardly gonna do any harm, it's good we have left back cover (not to mention he can play centre back and has a fcuking amazing free kick.)

Oh... and he got something around the 16 goal count playing centre back all season, League 1 I know. If he can do that this season, he won't but oh well... then I'd be over the moon.

FiNeRaIn Its important not to over-react either way. We need a left back because frankly williams is awful - harte has played at a much higher level and will at least be a threat from set pieces like sig was as well as offering more experience. I'm not too bothered having him there for a season and will not harp on about the sig money in relation to him like people are - he would probably have been signed anyway with the injuries we have. The club didn't plan to lose sig and if anyone thinks we were going to go rash and start spending money in the dying hours of transfer deadline to appease fans and show ambition you are very wrong.

Its not secret I completely disagree with the way the clubs run, I feel ripped off. But I would much rather we had time to weigh up potential signings and spend the money more wisely in January. That said, part of me thinks JM will hope the fans forget about the money so he doesn't have to spend it. Not filled with confidence at all - January will be where Im waiting to see whats really going on and that will influence whether or not I renew my season ticket next year. We've got a massive amount of cash for one player - I expect to see a few million of it invested in 2/3 players to strengthen the squad as a whole.

The single most sensible post of the day, bumped because the lesson still seems to be being ignored long after a reasonable cooling-off period.

An undisclosed fee means that the amount paid hasn't been made public. This is usually either because the club doesn't want to reveal how much they spent, or because they don't want to reveal the actual transfer fee in case they decide to sell the player on.

Another consideration might be that the other club involved might be the ones who have requested that the sums be kept discreet.

Scouring the fans forums for Carlisle and Brighton reveals mixed opinions about losing Hendrie and Harte. Harte is described as 'slow' by many supporters (and I think we already have as many slow defenders as we need!) and although he was their top goalscorer last season, that was in League One and his career total is 58 goals from 379 appearances.

As an 'attacking mid-fielder' we would expect more from Hendrie but his career record is 40 goals from 396 appearances. Both these figures exclude internationals and both cover 15 seasons. Translating that into goals per season comes in at 3.9 for Harte and 2.7 for Hendrie! Even added together this is hardly Sig standard. (And where is Snowball when you need him?)

It can also mean that the fee isn't initially finite. i.e. £200,000 up front + £50k after so many appearances + £25k after promotion etc.

sandman I'd look at every possible way to get the 4 million, selling the Stadium naming rights, getting... or even god help me raising ST Prices anything that would raise the required money.

You can only sell what people are willing to buy, and at a price people will pay. ST rises will reduce sales, especially if you're upping it by a couple of hundred quid each.

I'd really like to know what this actually means. Wouldn't the first step towards "fighting really hard" have been demanding more than £50k for the transfer?

The whole thing went through in less than a day. What exactly did Carlisle that demonstrates how unhappy they were to lose him?

So what's the difference between Carlisle fighting to keep a star player who's way to good for the division they're in and us fighting to keep the same ?
(not that I'm saying HArte is good - I'll reserve judgement till I see him play at this level)

When they offered him a new deal a few weeks ago?
