Nicky Shorey for me.

He went to the wrong club when he left RFC and has lost his way.

marcusopp We've had some interesting left backs over the years.
A category which definately includes Ian Harte!
People probably said the same about Shorey, £65k from Orient.

For me though, it's got to be Dylan Kerr my lord, dylan kerr ohh lord dylan kerr!

I know he was sh1t, but i loved him! Saw him score a cracker against stoke too in a 4-0 win

£25k from Leyton Orient

Handsome Man Sean Cummings has now played a competent game as well.

How the hell does Shaun Cummings get a mention in this thread? He wasn't that competent :|

Mid Sussex Royal Obviously Shorey but I rated Mark White a lot pre 1981 particularly before he got a serious knee injury.

Shorey was a similar player to Mark White, no great pace but always looked class on the ball and wasn't bad with free kicks either.

Also scored the best og I ever saw. Bouncing backpass from the halfway line to Steve Death on a frosty day....................

Mr Angry 1. Shorey
2. Richardson
3. Kerr

Agree with that for best 3 (ignoring Shorey's last season that is). Favourite LB's would have to be Kerr and Richardson. Quite liked Linden Jones too but can't remember if he was left or right sided.

Herbert Smith

Played four times for England and won gold at the 1908 Olympics.

Quite obviously Reading's best ever left back.

1. Steve Richardson
2. Nicky Shorey
3. Ryan Bertrand

For the record, Harte will be a revelation.

Imagine the bit-ching on this list if we bought a player for £25k from Leyton Orient

Shorey wasn't our sole bit of business on a day we recouped £6m from the sale of our best player, was he?

Point is we've done well finding bargains

Steve Hunt
Kevin Doyle
Shorey etc

and paid good money for disasters.

Carlisle are unbeaten in League 1 and currently top.

Harte was in the League 1 Team of the Season, has played at the top level
including finishing third in the Premiership and playing in a Champions League
semi-final.

He's scored twice this season already, a penalty and a header.

He's also forced some good saves with his free kicks

I think he may be a really great buy, whether that's 50K or 500K

Which of those were 33 when they signed? They were bargains because they were all capable of playing at a higher level than Championship, because they all had the potential to improve, because they had years on their side and would go on to give several seasons of high-level performance and because they would have massive resale value when the club had to sell.

Which of the above can be applied to Ian Harte? He may very well turn out to be an astute signing, but to defend the lack of serious investment by appealing to the three names above is bizarre and laughable.

I'm not "defending" anything. The current "buy' (cost-wise) is unimpressive
but if someone had said, "We'll give you seven million plus Harte and Kish" for Gylfi
I would have thought that an incredibly good deal for the club.

IMO, Harte is an excellent buy, should do a very good job for a season, maybe two
and will help to bring on Willams, Kelly, and Cummings one of which may well replace him.

Stabilising the defence was the key to future success.

Meanwhile he score free-kicks and penalties and headers.

We are going to score a lot of goals from corners and free-kicks

Ideal
Snowball IMO, Harte is an excellent buy

Fine. That's your opinion. I disagree.
In my book he is at best a reasonable signing, in that he could provide backup.
If you are signing 33-year-olds for £50k from league one and thinking that is the way forward, and that is "an excellent purchase", then that is a recipe for disaster.

To begin with he was a defender who couldn't defend, had a good shot and that was it. He was never quick, always slightly slow.
Now 10 years after that he's 33. He's still a defender who can't defend. In addition he's ten years older and SLOWER. He'll be slower than an oil rig by now.
And he can't defend. Great. This is success in the making! WOOHOO! EXCELLENT BUY!

Then people go on about he has pedigree this and that, he has international experience this and that.
Well great! So did Paul Bodin. And Les Ferdinand. Doesn't mean they weren't over the hill, past it players.

Agree, I used to like him for his free kicks, but he was always slow and crap at defending.
Plus he missed that penalty against Spain in normal time at World Cup 2002. Proven Bottler!

Easy. Dylan Kerr.

The goal in the 4-0 hammering of Stoke in our first season in what is now known as the championship stands out as one of the best I've seen. Solid left back and decent going forward. I can't remember the reasons as to why he left, was he sold, released or did he retire?

Also my memory of Steve Richardson playing left back is a bit hazy, I thought he was a right back?
