Take away the pens and free kicks....

by TBM » 01 Sep 2010 15:36

......that Sig scored for us, was he actually that much better than what we already have?

He was good im not denying that but at £6m he wasn't THAT good

Ian Harte will bang in the free kicks and pens for us now, hopefully it will also allow Howard to get forward more which i believe is his better position - defensively he's shaky.

He picked out passes nobody else would see. He tried through balls rather than the long ball. He could get past players with ease.

Also, he was the only one who could score gaols from outside the area ... however, at the same time, he could very much go missing during games; I took a friend to watch the Forest games and I'd been telling him all about The Sig beforehand but then I thought he was pretty anonymous in the game ...

No service. It's why he can flourish at Hoffenheim. Similar ability players around him.

So then £6m is a great bit of business for us

Marek Matejovsky could pick out passes nobody else would see and try through balls rather than the long ball too

Why we should of kept him.

Yes but he couldn't win a tackle without getting a yellow card - don't get me wrong, I really liked Marek, but god the boy could not tackle, whereas the Sig had much more of a physical strength about him.

Why? - if we dont have the players intelligent enough to get on the end of said balls - then the player is pointless for us

Exactly.

It's like the Romans. What did they do for us?

One of the main problems with Shane Long is that he can't pick out space.

He can fill it with his belly and his big arse though.

Ridiculous to say "take away all Sigurdsson's goals and what do you have left" - his set-piece ability is part of the reason he was such a good player. I actually think he was pretty lightweight but he's only 20 and will fill out plenty.

Yeah but Ian Harte will do just as good a job at set pieces

Sigurdsson, physical ?

Jeezy christ he's been gone for a smidgen over 24 hours and people are already making him out to be something he wasn't

Sigurdsson was our out-ball, our creative fulcrum (in the same way that Kitson was in Coppells team) and our dangerman. The opposition knew and so did our players.

Not only did he keep the ball for us, take the pressure off, create things and occupy the opposition more than the other players he was just a joy to watch.

The only players I've seen for Reading that come close to the technical ability he showed, as a 20 year old remember, are Little, Osborn, the Polish international of course and probably Shorey. I'll miss watching him play and the side will be worse off for not having him in it.

He also went missing in games and was easily muscled out. Yes, he had good technical ability (especially from deadball situations), but people are making him out to be a oxf*rd world beater....

A mate of mine couldn't believe the money we got for him yesterday. He came to a few games with me last season. Sigurdsson had a couple of good games (Bristol City & Sheff Weds), but in the others Villa, Newcastle, QPR (until late on) and Watford, he was nowhere to been seen. Nothing to do with service. At times he looked like a little boy.

Nothing away from Sig but for a mere £2m more they could have signed Rafael Van der Vaart. I know who I'd rather have

We got a cracking price for him

I thought he gave the ball away a hell of a lot. not sure he'd have been so popular had the free-kicks been saved or hit the wall, the penalties hit the bar etc. a good playe and no mistake but there is a tendency to go missing.
