4 defenders
2 defensive midfielders
3 attacking midfielders
1 striker.

But for some reason there are many who can't understand that.

Karacan was one of our most attacking players on Saturday. The wingers *have* to get back to help the full-backs when we lose the ball. Howard and Long are the only players who linger up the pitch when we're on the defensive.

The situation is a little more fluid than you suggest.

Nobody really.

The one thing to bear in mind though is that without that 'dodgy' decision we were second best. Results are the be all and end all but they generally follow on from performances (I remember saying this quite a bit before Christmas in Coppell's last season, before the wheels came off, when our clinical finishing was covering up some pretty poor performances).

A 3-0 over anyone is a good result, but the way we played until that first goal does provide some cause for concern, but it's still early days.

Agreed there are still areas of concern but overall we've seen an upward trend in results so far this season in the league, whilst losing our best plater, so something is beginning to click.

I've just rewatched that 3 or 4 times and I can't see the defender clip his foot at all, certainly not before Long starts to go down.

As for the ball not changing direction, it did. It went off towards the East Stand under the initial part of the tackle and Long wasn't in the act of shooting, so that tells you how misleading a still photo can be.

I do think the defender got man before ball, but a still photo which doesn't show how the ball or players got into those positions doesn't really confirm anything.

I have to say I don't recall the defender protesting at all about the decision either. The very least you would expect to see him do is indicate that he felt he got the ball.

At the very least, surely this one shot shows that there was not much luck involved with this decision going our way and, when compared to some of the soft red cards that have seen our players suspended for 3 matches, it was no more than we deserved.

My money would have been on us being down to no more than 10 men had we conceded those 2 pens.

I've not said it wasn't a penalty. I've just pointed out that the picture doesn't actually prove anything.

If you watch the video you see that Long wasn't in the process of taking a shot when the tackle was made, he was still looking to run the ball round the defenders lunge and some of the quotes on here about the direction of the ball and what was happening are plain and simply wrong.

Agreed that the first goal has a big bearing on the result and flow of a match, and that we were often second best during the 106 season until we turned the screw. It helps that we had the likes of Kitson and Doyle to do that consistently (and Hahnemann for some matching winning saves too), and I just don't think we have that quality in the squad at the moment to turn games quite as well we did that season.

Let's be honest, we were second best even after we'd scored in many of the games in the 106pt season. The fact is, though, that we won games even when we were not the dominant side and that is what makes success at this level, We rode our luck, defended well and scored some good counter-attacking goals. I have said it before and no doubt will say it again - at the end of the season they add up all your wins and multiply them by 3, then add on the draws; no mention of quality of performance, just a summation of points. In short, I'll take a win over dominance any day.

lol - I did have to chuckle listening to Rodgers post match interview after Swansea's last game when he was harping on about how good the performance was despite the loss. I thought, I've heard this all before somewhere.........
