Boro Away 18th September 2010

So the club intend flying up and getting a coach back. Ok, I admit I have not looked at he figures but I would have thought that a return flight would be cheaper than a single plus coach fare. Full story below:

Would of been nice to offer the fans a bit more incentive to go up there.

Kerrist. They could only afford to fly up there because we sold Gylfi and yet they're not flying back.

Let's hope we manage to sell McAnuff, Kebe and Fed for in excess of £14 million total in January then, so the poor club can afford a return flight.

Well obviously it isn't cheaper to get a flight there and back then!

I would imagine the club are chartering a flight as well so why waste money when they have a week to return to Reading?

Suspect the costing would be around 15k to charter an aircraft up there for the size they need., as would be flying from probably somewhere like Farnborough up to Durham Tees Valley AIrport, a reason why they wouldn't be having it on the way back, would be likely to do with landing rights at the regional airports rather than cost, as the aircraft is going to be in the wrong place for the broker and its going to have get it back anyway! By only having its a one way flight probs only saved about 1/2k
So the options they probably had was either get the coach back or wait until Sunday morning, and reckon most players would rather come back Saturday night by coach.

What is wrong with a scheduled flight?

McD shouldn't have mentioned the flight - it's just given people another stick to use.

But am I the only person who thought his comments were tounge in cheek?

But absolutely everything said by anyone connected with Reading FC gets posted onto here, over-analysed to death, then twisted to be used by people to further their own personal agenda.

Question is, does it really matter? Probably a treat for the players.

If they lose, they can all hitch hike back for all i care!!

I can see that flying up is better for them but they still have to stay in a hotel overnight which is also expensive - just can't understand why they can't get a scheduled flight back again in that case.

So does the coach travel up with their stuff in it and then bring them back?

And I don't understand what Dirk means about people "furthering their own agenda" - I don't have any agenda - I just find it strange that they would fly one way and go on coach on the way back.

iirc whenever they have flown up to a game they always come back by coach straight after the game. They don't stay in a hotel for saturday night but are driven back that night.

For long distances, a flight before a game is better for the players and their preparation, where as there's no rush to get home, so sitting on your backside for 5 hours wont hurt. If the club can save some money as well, that's a good thing, obviously!

Can't see anything wrong with flying, small beer compared to other costs, and yes clearly McD's comments were firmly tongue in cheek.

Didn't sound tongue in cheek at all in the interview I heard yesterday on Radio Berks. :|

I may be wrong but i seem to recall in the Prem they flew to Newcastle, M'boro or similar, and coached it back, stopping on the way for a break. Although it may have been two games in a week with a midweek on the way back.

Surely the point is that we will be fresh for the game, and can relax on the way home.
