Your Top 3 RFC Games Seen, EVER

by Harpers So Solid Crew » 21 Sep 2010 09:52

bit of light relief here, choose your own criteria, importance, fun, laugh, or how the Team Played.

Reading 4 Luton 1, Simod Cup Final,
absolutely great from everyone on the pitch, a real team performance, such a good feeling as Branfoot wasted our place in Level 2 by playing completely differently.

Bolton 4 Reading 3 Play-off final

Despite the defeat a complete performance from a superb team, formed, in all honesty for very little money, but a great team spirit and belief, also a never say dies attitude, as Quinn looked to finish a career with Premier football.

Reading 6 West Ham 0 Premier League Jan 07

With Murty missing I would put that team as the best we had at Premier level, WHU seemed to have an arrogance, and Reading just tore them apart. Everyone was up for the day, we made the kick off with seconds to spare, and enjoyed the game right to the end, as Reading kept going for the goals, rather than sit back on the lead. Hardly even mattered that it was a team that Pardew had created at West Ham.

2. Reading 4 Plymouth 3

3. Reading 4 Plymouth 3

I was there as well, but went for total football games instead, aslo was cold that day I seem to recall, and we were on the wee soaked South bank, with the smell of onions and burgers mixed in, loud raucuus fans singing like mad, some even swearing, and people had the audacity to stand as well, bring back the 4 day week and the winter of discontent, rather than the comfort!! of seats at Wembley or the Madstad

1. Archie 2 - Wolves 1

2. Archie 2 - Wolves 1

3. Archie 2 - Wolves 1

Probably because I brought the totally dead southbank back to life after we conceded... and the rest is history :D

1. Reading 3-2 Middlesbrough - first game in the Prem

2. Reading 2-1 Walsall - Play-off semi-final

3. Reading 4-3 Oxford - Rain soaked derby where Whitehead dropped a clanger

Honourable mentions to the 4-2 win over Wolves just after McGhee had pissed off and the 2-1 win over them when Archie scored two in injury time.

Top 3...no order...

Reading 5 Tranmere 0 (THE Robin Friday goal game) 1976-ish
Reading 4 Plymouth 3 (as already mentioned)
Newport 0 Reading 2 (the 13th league win on the spin in 1985)

Great memories. Thanks for cheering up the board !!

For the quality of the performance, plus hilarious commentary from John Helm and Ian St. John, my favourite Reading game of all time was...
Tranmere Rovers 1-3 Reading
Play off semi final 1995

For the incredible comeback after looking dead and buried for the best part of 1 hour...
Reading 4-3 Plymouth Argyle
1985/86

The third one is really difficult. For example, there were the wins against Middlesbrough and Liverpool in the Premier League but these were tinged with fortune and circumstance. There was also the first game after McGhee left when we hammered Wolves 4-2. But for atmosphere and the first 45 minutes where we dared to believe, coupled with an enormous sense of pride as well as bumping into a bunch of honest and extremely relieved away supporters, my choice for 3rd is...
Reading 2-4 Aston Villa
FA Cup 6th Round, 2010

Reading 8 Southport 0 has to be up there somewhere for me. Whittling it down to a best 3 is hard, but in addition to that one I think I'd add in the Simod Cup final and the Derby game when we confirmed the Championship.

1. Simod Cup Final - my first ever Reading game

2. Reading 3-2 Boro - historic scenes

3. Reading 2-1 Bolton - evening game, totally rammed, crowd went absolutely mental. One of the very, very rare moments when you feel like you love Reading fans.

Tranmere 5-0 (Robin Friday, 1976, as stated above).

Leicester away 1-1, 2005 (promotion to the Premiership).

Bolton 3-4 at Wembley.

My fourth choice would be Newcastle away in our first Premiership season, lost 2-3 on a December Tuesday, great away support including me and one bro. Could and should have won that one.
