bump.. just to end the Snowball/Mags fued next door......

For the record, good recent form for Longy, "long" may it continue, but he did this at the end of last season then totally went awol after the summer. He's also done this in patches throughout his time here but this time he HAS to deliver on a consistent basis.

You seriously need to get over your statistics. Doyle has already acheived more than Long ever will. Regardless of whatever statistics you want to dredge up to manipulate and support your view, he will NEVER be good enough to start regularly for a decent Reading side (mid tier 2 or higher).

He could have been. But he didn't get the first team games he needed. Had he gone on loan to league 1 and played a significant number of games as a starter, even as late as last year, then he had a chance to go places. Now?

No chance.

Thank-you for your wise words

What a load of knee-jerk crap.
Anyone could see that he was unfit, out of touch and lacking in confidence earlier in the season.

He's definitely good enough for us.

Shane's doing great, and is a standout forward amongst the lower-table scrappers. It was encouraging to see him score against Villa because the only really question-mark against him now - in terms of the level we are playing at - is whether he is a bit of a flat-track bully, ie does his touch and lack of awareness make it too easy for better defenders to play against him? My feeling is I tend to not expect much from him in tight games against decent opposition but that might just be years of conditioning. He clearly is improving so maybe I'm being a touch harsh.

Maybe snowball can break the last two seasons' stats down to see how he does against the stronger teams, and whether that's something that's on the up?

A year ago a good number of posters on this thread made the comparison of Long to Lita saying the latter was a far better player.

Interesting to see their stats for the current season.

Lita has played 21 + 10 subs for M'Boro this season and has had 58 shots for 6 goals plus 2 assists.

Long has played 13 + 11 subs and has 30 shots for 8 goals, plus 2 assists.

As I've said many times before, Lita is the new Leon Knight. Give it another 6 years and he'll have gone down through the English leagues and be up in the middle Scottish leagues as well.

You seriously need to get over your statistics. Doyle has already acheived more than Long ever will. Regardless of whatever statistics you want to dredge up to manipulate and support your view, LONG will NEVER be good enough to start regularly for a decent Reading side (mid tier 2 or higher).

No chance.

Strikers are on the pitch to score goals. How many does Shane Long have this season having started every game?

Not enough but the fact remains he has started regularly for a decent Reading side that is mid Tier 2 or higher.

Not really. When he plays a full season, or near a full season (ie, 40+ starts), only then will I consider him to have started regularly for a decent Reading side. But hey, that's only my opinion.

I'd say that's increasingly an arguable point, particularly if we're playing the 4-2-3-1.

21st February 2009

Here it is:

Snowball
Gordons Cumming Whatever................

If we get promoted Shane will be gone.

You might be right, and he will then become a top player elsewhere

I go on record as saying if he leaves Reading and avoids a serious injury he will score

10 Premiership goals
or
20 Championship goals
or
30 League One goals

in a season.

It's totally understandable that he doesn't shift Doyle or Hunt from their top-two striker positions
but I think if he had an extended run in a championship side he would be a decent striker

You may now take the p!ss, as is your wont. A few morons will say he has had an extended run, but he hasn't.

I think the best he's had is 3-4 games

He was injured in our opening game but had to stay on as we had used all our subs.

He didn't play at Portsmouth.

TBF, I'd forgotten that, too.
