As W&E face going into Administration (rumour is it has already happened but no confirmation yet) Burnham FC have called a meeting of the fans for next Monday as they too are facing a bleak future with attendances even less than W&E's.

Burnham's gate receipts for their League Cup game last week weren't even enough to pay the officials!

They have a very tidy new stand and clubhouse facility that must have cost a few quid but nowhere near enough people are using it.

Meanwhile Rooney and Yaya each get paid more in a week than the 2 clubs' combined total debts.

Which makes me wonder whether W&E's dreams are realistic or pie in the sky

Location location location?

And of course Burnham don't have a G3 pitch, a gym or a restaurant to my knowledge.

Thing is, unless there is a sea change, football revenues alone are not going to be sufficient to sustain any club in the Southern Premier League for long, unless you happen to have gates such as Salisbury. Clubs have to be looking at alternatives and, because of the attraction of the location, it is reasonable to assume that W&E are better placed than most to generate additional incomes.

But as the man said, there are no guarantees and a lot of obstacles in the way. Hopefully the will, strength, energy and skill are present amongst the guys involved to see it through.

We shall see eh?

Beware of Greeks bearing gifts. 2-3 years foe the dreams to be realised? How does the club survive in the interim? 4 kids pitches at the Park End? Where do the kids change?

How does the club survive in the interim? you ask...

With a much reduced football budget is the obvious answer I guess. Cue a relegation (or two) in all probability, but I don't think there's an alternative. Stott won't be a benefactor, and won't put substantial money in unless he sees a viable long-term plan. Sustaining a loss of £50k++ for the next 2 years which, with the current projections seems inevitable, will most certainly not be on his list of ambitions.

I see administration, cut in playing budget of circa 50%+, relegation this year, bottom half finishes for the 2 years after whilst the new facilities / investments are put in place then hopefully a push towards new prosperity.

Well, you gotta have a vision eh?

AFC Hayes pay expenses to all but a few players and with the right man in charge did very well. Windsor have slightly more fans than AFC hayes and a few other small South West clubs so could easily of survived in that league on a realistic budget. However with such massive debts it's nigh on impossible to keep a club alive for that long. I'd suggest folding and restarting in the Hellinic IF you can keep the same faces around the club bar one or two people who really do not have a can do personality or even a okay i will do one! If the fans stay on board crowds of 140 would easily give them a budget to climb back to South West level quickly and Stott can happily talk the talk but fail to deliver for a while!

The Burnham situation sounds more worrying than the Windsor one. I can see them merging at some stage - Slough Town seem the obvious candidates so they can play nearer their home town then they do currently.

The leagues also need to look at themselves as there seem to be an awful lot of cup competitions clubs have to enter.

A question to all - whereabouts is Burnham's ground and how far is it from the station?

FOR INFO [Tad Showbiz] Burnham FC play at The Gore, Wymers Wood Rd SL1 8JB

.. from what I can work out its about 1.7 miles NW of Burnham Station.

Don't know Burnham that well - though I've driven to the ground a few times -looks as if you'd need to turn left/north out of the Station on to Burnham Lane - stay on this, NW past what may be/may have been a Harvester - carry on until it becomes Hogfair Lane/Britwell Road and finally Gore Road - swings round to the West. The ground is off to the right at the T-junction with Lents Rise Rd.

Link should take you to their forthcoming Fixtures - they may have a few Cup ties B&B County etc coming up too, will check later (bit of a rush now - School coll'n time) and update if so. :wink:

Fleet Spurs 1-4 United Services Portsmouth
Petersfield Town 2-2 Tadley Calleva

- braved the M25 - which behaved itself for once - and got to Spartan South Midlands Div One : Kings Langley 5-0 Berkhamsted - this was 2nd vs 1st - with the away side boasting a 14-1-0 record before the game. Home side completely overpowered them on a very 'sticky' surface and grabbed top spot - though they have played 5 games more - so I'd expect 'Berko' to climb back on top before too long - there are a lot of very mediocre sides in this division.
Not a bad little set-up - well within an hours drive - a mile or so north of M25 jn 20 up the A4251, just on the northern edge of the 'village'. Clubhouse small but functional - Tea Bar did all the usual fare - my youngest was with me and expressed approval of the Sausage and Bacon Bap.

I'd be susprised if Burnham had debt as bad as Windsor but they've always seemed to 'over count' their crowds so perhaps an era of realistic budgeting is taking hold there. Windsor are in the High Court Wednesday and the HMRC are playing hardball. Makes you laugh when clubs like Cardiff etc can get cases postponed but Windsor seem to be struggling to do that over a much lesser debt than some clubs owe,although granted they have higher income streams!

Burnham and Slough wont merge. Slough have spent too long on this new ground but then again with no real noise for a while perhaps it is an option.

... by way of a brief local County CUP/Trophy update - Burnham are out of this season's FA Trophy and the Southern League Cup .... but do have a very interesting County match coming up later this month :

Tues 23rd Nov 7.30pm
Berks/Bucks Senior Cup Second Round
Burnham V Windsor & Eton

...winners 'away' v Wycombe Wanderers in the Quarter Finals - I think Wycombe occasionally 'switch' venues for this competition.

... the other 2nd Round games coming up :-

Tues 9th Nov
Thatcham Town v Hungerford Town
Tues 23rd Nov
Aylesbury FC v Chesham Utd - the 'Ducks' ('Aylesbury UNITED') cannot enter this one now they've dropped to STEP05 and their place is taken by 'Aylesbury FC' who have stepped up to the Southern League and of course still play in Aylesbury.

Marlow v Slough Town

Diddy won their 2nd round game 1-0 @ Abingdon Utd earlier this week.

In the 'lesser' B&B County Trophy the draw is progressing as follows:

Wed 29th Sept RESULT
Ascot United 6 - 1 Shrivenham Town - Ascot @ holders Newport Pagnell in Quarter Final

Mon 8th Nov 7.45pm
Binfield V Chalfont St Peter

Tues 16th Nov 7.45pm
Bracknell Town V Flackwell Heath - winners @ RTFC

Tues 23rd Nov 7.45pm
Holmer Green V Sandhurst Town
Wantage Town V Abingdon Town

Wed 24th Nov 7.45pm@ Leighton FC
Aylesbury United V Wokingham & Embrook -

Thanks FoC - linked worked ok. Will need to get down there but no time this side of Christmas.

I am tempted to do the Reading double this weekend with Town at home in the FA Vase 2nd Round against Warlingham (I think) then leave early to get to the Madejski in time for k/o.

By the way am I right in thinking the B&B Senior Cup is now really known as the Berks & Bucks Invitation Cup? Might be why Reading aren't in it as the B&B refuse them entry. Also I know they mucked up the draw this season when they left one of the teams out (Maidenhead I think but don't quote me) and had to re do the draw.

... well I doubt if it could possibly be 20th Nov now - Truro are supposed to be H v AFC Sudbury in the FA Trophy 3rd Round - the W&E game may have been the original Fixture date not taking Cup/Trophy Rounds into account?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
...sorry been neglecting this thread of a midweek a bit - cos of all the rain - gutted about Binfield on Mon - I was planning to get to that one - has been re-arr for a Monday later in the month (22nd I think?) Larges Lane was off tonight too - as was Holyport, Flackwell and a couple of others round here.
I managed to get down to Hartley Wintney (Nev Roach:Manager) - they are now w/o 'Razor' Spence - EP claimed he'd come back to play somewhere in the Reading Senior (South Reading?) - they were by far the better footballing side but surprisingly dropped points (3-3) to lowly Chobham - who at least seemed to get themselves fired up and organised for this one. Very noisy set of 'benches' too.
Overheard someone saying they'd (Chobham) brought in a few 'guests' :? following their 0-7 defeat at the w/e.
HW looked good going forward but were staggeringly inept at the other end.
Just noticed their programme lists a Martin Williams on the bench - surely not 'Skittles' is it?
- can't say I noticed him - fairly sure he didn't get used as a sub - will check the HW website for more info?
Simeon Howell maintains the RFC connection too - was one of 'our kids' wasn't he? Looked v.tidy in midfield.
Was bleedin' cold though.
