Snowball CHANCES required to Score a Goal (ie how deadly)

4.25 Kitson
4.86 Long EDIT: Corrected - Shane's 30 goals reduced to 28 and upped to 29
5.27 Doyle
5.40 Rasiak
5.50 Church
5.64 Noel Hunt
5.94 Lita
7.06 Kebe
9.00 Gylfi

There's no way Gylfi had 180 chances last season, that's 4 a game for him alone and there were times last season that the whole team didn't even have 4 chances in a game

You can view chances on the OS

Gylfi Sigurdsson 57 46 06 14 07 01 71 ON 53 OFF 07 HW 2009-10
Gylfi Sigurdsson 03 08 01 00 00 00 03 ON 08 OFF 01 HW 2010-11

Those figures included penalties (8 of them, one missed)

The figures posted by me were WITH PENALTIES REMOVED as many said pens were misleading.

Gyfli had 131 chances last season 12 this season, total 143. Remove 7 scored penalties that's 136 chances for 15 goals. He also missed a penalty.

15 into 136 = 9 and a bit.

No those stats aren't "chances" they are shots. Therefore they include shots from 30 yards which is not a "chance", and it doesn't include chances that don't result in a shot (for example when a ball is played across the 6 yard box and a player fails to connect or if a player is through on the keeper and the keeper smothers the ball).

But Snowball won't understand that........

The stats don't change at all.

The OS says "shooting", I meant shots and headers. Starting to attempt to add in someone sliding in and just missing a cross is nigh on impossible.

Gylfi's SHOTS from distance still resulted in 1 in 33 going in.

Exactly that is why your stats are misleading. A shot from 30 yards is not a chance, whereas as a playing running through on goal who mis controls and the keeper smoths is a chance, just as a player failing to connect with a cross that he should have connected with is also a chance. You add those sort of chances in to Shane's stats (which you can't becuase the data isn't available) and he will look a lot less "deadly".

As you have been told so many times before stats don't tell the whole story especially when the stats aren't even there to show what you want them to.

I am using "chance" poorly to mean "shots and headers", but from now, chastened, I will call them "shots"

GYLFI WASTES TOO MANY "POSSIBILITIES" BY SHOOTING FROM DISTANCE WITH A CONVERSION RATE THAT IS HOPELESS.

I suppose he could have always tried to retain possession, lose the ball and given the opposition a chance to counter attack. That would have helped his stats because at least they wouldn't have shown up as missed shots.

And a shot from 30 yards that the keeper catches easily, DOESN'T allow a counter-attack?

And when did a Gyfli-quality player start losing possession all the time? That doesn't follow, does it?

I don't recall too many being easily saved. Most went out for goal kicks and therefore no quick counter attack.

So how many of Long's RFC goals do you suppose have been from open play?

Almost all of them! 32 goals, 3 pens, and I think virtually all the rest in open play

Here they are:

2005-06

Goal 01: 01 Yards v Derby Header, equaliser, from Point-Blank range
Goal 02: 14 Yards v Birmingham. Low shot from 14 yards
Goal 03: 08 Yards v Derby Header (No info, best guess)
Goal 04: 12 Yards v Derby Shot (From wide, no other info, best guess)

2006-07

Premiership

Goal 05: 03 Yards v Liverpool (League Cup, Header from close range)
Goal 06: 12 Yards v Burnley (FA Cup, best estimate, "from an exceptionally wide angle when forced wide")
Goal 07: 06 Yards v Sheff Utd (no extra info, best estimate)
Goal 08: 02 Yards v Wigan (Outjumps Unsworth; header)

2007-08

Premiership

Goal 09: 06 Yards v Portsmouth (No info, deflects Harper shot)
Goal 10: 08 Yards v Newcastle Winning goal, head on by Sonko, shot, no distance info, best estimate
Goal 11: 10 Yards v Man City (side-footed shot past Hart)

2008-09
Goal 12: 12 Yards v Burnley (no distance info, best estimate)
Goal 13: 05 Yards v Norwich (no official distance info, from memory)
Goal 14: 02 Yards v Southampton (brave header close in broke nose)
Goal 15: 12 Yards v Sheffield Wednesday (Shot from 12 Yards)
Goal 16: 12 Yards v Charlton (Penalty, won by Long)
Goal 17: 04 Yards v Charlton (Bullet header near post)
Goal 18: 10 Yards v Derby (Put through, best estimate)
Goal 19: 05 Yards v Norwich (Header)
Goal 20: 05 Yards v Norwich (Header)

2009-10
Goal 21: 06 Yards v Liverpool (Extra-Time header from Gunnarson's cross)
Goal 22: 08 Yards v Barnsley (Winner from a Bertrand cut-back. no distance info, best estimate from memory)
Goal 23: 08 Yards v Doncaster (Header from Howard cross, "yards out")
Goal 24: 10 Yards v Plymouth (Put through, shot)
Goal 25: 12 Yards v Plymouth PENALTY
Goal 26: 03 Yards v Aston Villa Mills flick-on, second header by Shane
Goal 27: 10 Yards v Aston Villa shot low from Kebe pass
Goal 28: 17 Yards v Derby Gets ball 30 yards out, beats man, sprints forward and lashes home, from edge of box (EDIT)
Goal 29: 10 Yards v Peterboro Break through, shot

2010-11

Goal 30: 12 Yards v Palace Wins PENALTY and scores it
Goal 31: 12 Yards v Burnley Wins PENALTY and scores it
Goal 32: 25 Yards v QPR Brilliant 25-Yard shot on the run

Average distance 9.0 Yards (for comparison, Gylfi's open play shots average 11.6 Yards out)

Found one Shane 30-yard shot saved.

There may be others, but finding them isn't easy!

Incidentally, 10 of his 32 goals have been against Premiership opposition.

EDIT: That Derby game was where Shane blasted the penalty over the bar, savage in goal.

I'm not convinced that goal against Derby was from 28 yards........(the BBC live text say it was inside the area but I don't agree with that either).

Just watched it. He strikes it just inside the box.

Seeing it on the OS I now remember it. He gets it well out, beats the player, sprints to the edge of the box and whack.

Funny how memory works. Next season we'll "remember" how Mills gave away the penalty at QPR...
