I've collated the actual minutes for Shane for 5 of the 6 seasons
and I'm taking as truthful the total given by (whoever) when
challenging the stats and the efficcacy of the rule of thumb.

Column 1 is the actual minutes

Column 2 is Starts (subs)

Column 3 is Calculated Minutes using the 1 + 0.167 Rule of Thumb

0565 - 05 (10) - 0600 - Season 2005-06
1110 - 11 (12) - 1170 - Season 2006-07 EDIT OS says 12 (12)
1011 - 10 (21) - 1215 - Season 2007-08 EDIT OS says 10 (22)
1953 - 15 (26) - 1737 - Season 2008-09 Figures Given by A N Other
2246 - 24 (12) - 2340 - Season 2009-10
1188 - 15 (01) - 1365 - Season 2010-11

Actual v Rule of Thumb
8,073 ------ 8,427

So with 80 Starts and 82 Sub Appearances, 162 Appearances over SIX seasons, with three different managers, 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 or 4-2-3-1, in favour or out of favour, aged 18 or 23, scoring goals or not, in The Premiership for 2 seasons, in The Championship for 4 Seasons, playing sides higher than us in two different cups, playing sides lower than us in cups... despite ALL those variables, I could take the 80 (82) and make a prediction that Shane Long had played 8,427 minutes (and just think of all those 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 minutes of injury time, say an average of 3-4 minutes Injury Time every time he's a sub on the field at the end of the game? 82 x 3-4 minutes = 246-328 minutes

8,073 Minutes - the actual counted (not including injury-time because we don't know it)

82 times Long has finished as a sub (times, say 3.5 minutes)
20 times Long has finished a full 90 minutes (20 x 3.5)

102 x 3.0 minutes = 306 minutes
102 x 3.5 minutes = 362 minutes <<<<<<<<
102 x 4.0 minutes = 408 minutes

Difference between Estimate of all-minutes played and 8,073 is 8,427-8,073 = 354 Minutes

Best estimates of Injury Time played 306-408 minutes (3-4 minutes of injury time)

Bloody Hell I am so GOOD!!

As we all feared - Long is the least effective striker we've had on the books in years. And yet he is a certain starter for us these days, no wonder we're going down the pan. Cheers for that sobering thought, Snowball.

cmonurz Grow up. I've been abundantly clear all the way through that my stats were for league games. All the way through.

Bull

More untrue accusations. My original post, on page 39, on this subject. I am clearly talking about league games. Perhaps you could just admit you missed that bit, instead of another rude response?

Cmonurz And Snowball, Long's goal yesterday was his second in open play in his last 26 league appearances (25 starts). Prior to that he scored 4 in 4 league games, after another drought back to the start of last season.

So from the first league game last season his record for goals in open play is:

1. 15 games, no goals
2. 4 games, 4 goals
3. 26 games, 2 goals

I won't wait for an apology. Although seen as the worst I've ever posted in your direction is 'grow up', an apology for calling me stupid, a moron and a twat, and that you have no respect for me, is also due. I won't wait for that either.

No response, sur-prise.

I think you can add me to that list too, though it's hard to keep track the way this flies from one point to another in seconds.

You're so totally right, of course

These stats show that it would take Doyle 268 games to get 100 goals, whereas with Long we'd have to go through all those 268 games and then wait for another three games! Meanwhile we'd have gone into administration and n=been relegated.

The big, BIG, difference being that most of Doyle's goals came in the premiership. Also, a lot more of Long's goal have been scored when he's come off the bench, which you so passionately argue when the conversation turns to whether Church should start instead of Long are not as significant.

TBH I don't know why I, or anyone else for that matter, bother to argue with you. The mere fact that you are trying to compare Long to Doyle is totally laughable.

BIG Fail!

Doyle scored
19 Goals for RFC in the Premiership
37 Goals for RFC in the Championship

Now when was ONE THIRD "Most of Doyle's goals?

If you're going to pick at the edges of my stats, get the centre of yours right.

It took me nearly 20 seconds to check how much you were wrong.

Also, a lot more of Long's goal have been scored when he's come off the bench, which you so passionately argue when the conversation turns to whether Church should start instead of Long are not as significant

What do you mean by a lot more? Do you mean a high percentage of Long's goals were as a sub? Are you sure?

He may have STARTED as super-sub, but that changed YEARS ago.

01 20 LATE SUB Derby 2-2 31/12/05
02 89 Start, Cup Birmingham 1-1 28/1/06
03 22 LATE SUB 1 Derby 5-0 1/4/06
04 22 LATE SUB 2 Derby 5-0 1/4/06
05 90 Start, Cup Liverpool 3-4 25/10/06
06 90 Start, Cup Burnley 3-2 9/1/07
07 73 Start Sheff Utd 3-1 20/1/07
08 80 Start Wigan 3-2 30/1/07
09 14 LATE SUB Portsmouth 4-7 29/9/07
10 7 LATE SUB Newcastle 2-1 27/10/07
11 82 Start Man City 2-0 8/3/08
12 65 On in 25th Burnley 3-1 4/10/08
13 10 LATE SUB Norwich 2-0 13/12/08
14 90 START Southampton 1-1 28/12/08
15 13 LATE SUB Sheff Wed 2-1 3/3/09
16 90 START 1 Charlton 2-2 10/3/09
17 90 START 2 Charlton 2-2 10/3/09
18 90 START Derby 2-0 21/4/09
19 90 START 1 Norwich 2-0 27/4/09
20 90 START 2 Norwich 2-0 27/4/09
21 39 LATE SUB Liverpool 2-1 2009-10
22 90 START Barnsley 1-0 2009-10
23 90 START Doncaster 2-1 2009-10
24 90 START 1 Plymouth 2-1 2009-10
25 90 START 2 Plymouth 2-1 2009-10
26 90 START 1 Villa 2-4 2009-10
27 90 START 2 Villa 2-4 2009-10
28 90 START Derby 4-1 2009-10
29 90 START Peterboro 6-0 17/4/10
30 90 START Palace 3-0 2010-11

31 90 START Burnley 4-0 2010-11
32 90 START QPR 1-3 2010-11

So Just 8 of LONG's 32 Goals were as a sub, 7 of those 8 were before March 18 months ago.

Apart from winning the penalty at Anfield, and then scoring the winning header, 17 of the last 18 goals scored by Shane Long were as a starter
