Mikele Leigertwood

by The Prisoner » 22 Nov 2010 11:38

Signed on loan til Jan 2011.

Official text.

NOT a striker! Midfielder, and a versatile one if the text is to be believed!

A centre-back who sometimes plays in midfield in a Bryn sort of way,i.e. breaking up play but not a playmaker.
An interesting one which implies to me that there could be ongoing fitness doubts with Ivar,Bryn and possibly Kish.

Is he the ex Palace and QPR player? IIRC we had a bid accepted for him a few years back but he went elsewhere

Wiki lists him as a defensive midfielder. One of those players who seems to have been around for ages without really doing much.

Clearly signed with something in mind, just confused as to what.

The "midfield general" that some have been saying we need?

He's a decent signing. Nothing out of the ordinary but a solid player at this level.

I'd say he's been more of a midfielder the last few years than a defender BR, but the similarities with Gunnarsson are certainly there. He'll add that extra steel to our midfield but I wouldn't say he's one to really run a game which is more what I'd have hoped for.

A cheap player to cover multiple areas but unlikely to walk into the side. A typical Reading signing then!

Yup - as been discussed on the UROG section

Its a position we need and i am glad we have signed someone to play it, rather than a striker which everyone else seems to be calling out for.

The fact that he has joined til mid Jan (i.e. not for one month) suggests it is a try before you buy deal to me.

Oh ok. Don't really read UR&G, but didn't really perceive us as needing such a player. Or to put it another way, I'd hope our relatively fluid attack isn't blunted by a midfield plodder. Having two defenders in Mills and Zurab (in particular) happy to play the ball out of defence, I'm not convinced we need him, but time will tell.

And I hope this doesn't see Karacan losing his place.

According to false hoops fan in the office "one of most frustrating players you will see", "lazy" "not a holding midfielder", "big but does not put himself about enough", sounds like a typical loanee / signing

Leigertwood plodding around, Kebe running into things, and Karacan bossing the entire middle of the park?

*Shudder*.

On the whole i hate the loan system and having loan Players at the club.

any self respecting football club should be buying or creating its own talent, not scrounging other clubs cast offs.

Some years ago I remember watching us play Wimbledon and thinking that I wouldn't mind us signing Leigertwood (centre-back),McAnuff (winger)and Agyemang (striker).
That's two out of the three so just Agyemang to come then.

OS The Royals have agreed a deal to take QPR midfielder Mikele Leigertwood on loan from league leaders Queens Park Rangers.

Leigertwood put pen to paper at Hogwood Park this morning to seal a loan move to Reading which will run until 25th January 2011.

Royals boss Brian McDermott said, "We're delighted to get Mikele in on loan. He is a player who has earned promotion to the Premier League before, via the play-offs with Crystal Palace, and who has worn the captain's armband at QPR.

"Mikele brings a wealth of experience through the door and I am surprised QPR have allowed us to sign a player with such ability and experience."

Leigertwood, who has just turned 28, began his career with Wimbledon before joining Selhurst Park co-habitants Crystal Palace in 2004.

The versatile 6'1" midfielder, who can also play in defence, earned promotion to the top flight as an Eagle and earned further Premier League appearances at Palace before joining Sheffield United's newly promoted top tier outfit in 2006/7.

QPR boss John Gregory paid £900,000 for his signature the following summer and he was soon made skipper at Loftus Road. The Antiguan international arrives at Madejski Stadium having played 10 times for Rangers so far this season, and with more than 300 professional appearances under his belt in total.

Leigertwood trained with the Royals this morning and is available for selection ahead of this weekend's visit of Leeds United. He will take squad number 8.

I guess we have Gylfi's replacement then...

After all, none of our players have ever benefitted from going out on loan

He is a no nonsense tackler and does work a lot, but he can drift in and out of games quite a lot
