All Time Loan XI

by Wimb » 25 Nov 2010 14:03

Loan Deadline Day Fun....

Name a side made entirely of Loanees

GK: Tommy Wright

DL: Neil Clement
DC: Matthew Upson
DC: Ady Williams
DR: Kenny Brown

ML: Luke Chadwick
MC: Mikele Leigertwood
MC: Kevin Watson
MR: Glen Little

SC: Kevin Lisbie
SC: Michael Branch

Struggle to think of central midfielders or strikers we've had on loan to be honest, was Watson on loan to begin with?....

Can't take it seriously if it doesn't include Sam Jennings or Steve Death .... or are you putting a time limit on it, 1990 onwards?

At centre mid you missed out one of our top loanees ever, David Lee.

Steve Archibald up front, please! Also, does Kitson count?

Archibald wasn't on loan, wasn't he persuaded out of retirement for one game by McGhee to help with an injury crisis.

Had forgotten about Kitson coming back on loan  no limit on it Strap but I've only been watching since January 95 so can't comment before that :D

Little must be one of few (if only) RFC player to come on loan, sign, then come back on loan.

I have been thinking about this for the last couple of weeks. The best I could come up with was this:

Jim Leighton

Andy Griffin
Matthew Upson
Adrian Williams
Ryan Bertrand

Luke Chadwick
George Shipley
CM (edit) David Lee :D
John Salako

Lloyd Owusu
Martin Robinson

I could not think of a second decent CM and, not having seen how Liegertwood fits in makes it a bit impossible to include him. I excluded Kitson because he was not that good for us when he came back on loan. The hardest position to fill was GK. We have had some very good ones including Deathy, Chris Woods, Tommy Wright and Marcus Hahnemann to name 4.

No Mark Nicholls?

Darren Barnard and Mark Robins could squeeze somewhere Shirley?

I'd argue Zurab is a tad better than Ady Williams as well.

Fair do's. Even I wasn't around to see Sam Jennings play for us.

Alan Judge was another decent loan keeper who later signed permanently. Full list I can find of the modern error loanees is below. Any missing?

Strap you legend, to quote Alan Partridge (the Steve Coogan character, not the Torquay-supporting Stan Smith lookalike Hob Nobber) 'I love you.....in a way'; the latest masterpiece in your statistical portfolio devoted to ROFLeading FC being this quite magnificent excel spreadsheet of some obscure names 'on borrowed time' to RFC which has made me wistfully nostalgic on a tedious, chilly November evening. What kind of f*cking geek keeps a bloody spreadsheet of 'temporary transfers'? Basically a slightly more organised version of me, that's who.

Some real love/hate characters there! Some undeservedly vilified, some cult heroes. Steve Morrow! Massively average for us wasn't he, but how proud I was when he scored a winner in the 92/93 League Cup final for Arsenal back in the day where even the most obtuse RFC-reference on national television was something to be trumpeted.

John Keeley! Useless Oldham 'keeper loaned in 91/92 at a time Steve Francis was injured. I only saw him play once, back in the days when I was a nervous 12 year old, turning and gawping at the angry vox pops on the South Bank. Keeley seemed to already be hated by the home crowd, he let in 4 on a night we scored 3 against league leaders Stoke. Heart-breaking at the time, we played well and were mugged by a side looking down on us in the league. Fast forward 2 seasons, Ray Wallace! Reading were now the ones doing the mugging but a spring slump coincided with the entirety of his loan spell. I was now old enough to be part of the angry mob taking a dislike. F*ck you, Danny's brother!

Kenny Brown! Didn't he sign for us once a season every season in the 90s? Nick Colgan! To many a Reading supporter of my generation he is the devil incarnate for his hapless and helpless glovesmanship during that interminable run of defeats which ruined the last season at EP. Michael O'Neill! Absoute pony of course, but he will forever be the penultimate Reading goalscorer at Elm Park. Mark McKeever! Lit up the first season at the Madj by being perhaps the only Burns signing to play well in consecutive games before fading into obscurity as the play-offs disappeared out of view. Alan Maybury! Sent off vs Man City and single-handedly responsible for those play-offs going off the radar. We were at least 2-0 down at the time in actual fact Alan, but history will not remember you well.

Legendary loanees of course include Matt Upson, Bikey and Zurab, but more obscure shout-outs to Tony Barass for scoring an equaliser at Luton, Tommy Wright Wright Wright for causing Stuart Pearce to be harassed by late-night phone-cals from Jimmy Quinn, Jim Leighton for getting us on Saint & Greavsie (see Steve Morrow) and Lloyd Owusu for the Pigbag. Lloyd also became better known as DJ LMO and had a hit with a cover version of Gilbert O'Sullivan's 'A Loan Again (Naturally).'

Steve Blatherwick for being so influential in the 2-1 win over Wolves. Gr8 flick on for Archies 2nd and I got crushed pretty badly in the ensuing melee.
