handbags_harris cmonurz, you are fast becoming as irritating as Snowball with the stats :|

You don't have to read them.

A point that has been made on this thread is that Long actually isn't that bad in front of goal, when you take his whole Reading career, the stats suggest he is in fact getting worse in that respect, that's all.

Northern Git A postman who does not deliver letters - fired
A trawlerman whoes not catch fish - fired
A milkman who does not deliver milk - fired
A striker who does not score goals .........................

I wonder if Snowball would be as forgiving with such a postman when not receiving important letters if he perceived him to be hardworking in other ways, or if the fisherman delivered no fish but had a nice shiny boat, or his milkman received no milk in the mornings but the milkman was very good at looking after his milkfloat?

Exactly.

Not fit for purpose as we keep saying.

We need a striker AS A MATTER OF F**KING URGENCY as we keep saying.

Yet another f**king toothless striking display by categorically the worst striker in the history of the club in the 29 years I've been watching Reading.

WAKE THE F**K UP MADEJSKI YOU OLD GIT.

Hehe. I've watched Brayson and worse. But what makes them acceptable is they weren't starting week in week out thus being the worst striker I can remember for me. And I would be willing to bet £1000s that if Brayson were to start all the games this season he'd fluke in at least as many goals as Long has managed so far. And cost FAR less in wages.

So, do we expect to see Rooney being shipped out of Man Utd soon then?

Very likely, just a matter of who will pay Man U enough.

So, someone is likely to think that a striker who doesn't score goals is worth a huge wedge then?

Long's Last 40 Appearances for RFC

Most recent 40 Appearances, 3,069 Minutes = 34.1 x 90 minutes for 13 goals = 1 Goal every 236 minutes

cmonurz has been highlighting (unfairly, selectively) Shane Long's lack of goals and/or lack of goals from open play. In order to ignore Shane's crucial goals in the FA Cup he has focussed on league games. I wondered how it would look if we looked at ALL Shane's games back to his first goal last season (at Liverpool where he also won the crucial penalty for the equaliser).

The first thing to notice is who has scored for Reading FC. Siggurdson and Long together account for 46% of RFC's goals. With Kebe they reach 60%. After these three only Church (6) and Harte (4) have even vaguely significant contributions.

Long was a massive contributor to the win at Liverpool, winning the equaliser and scoring the winner. He scored the only goal versus Barnsley, scored both goals in the win v Plymouth. Versus Palace he broke the deadlock by winning and scoring a penalty, then sealed the win by winning another penalty. Along with Tabb, Long played brilliantly at Burnley scoring a goal, making a goal, winning a free-kick which led to a goal. He also had the assist for Pearce's goal v Forest and Hunt's goal at Watford. He was outstanding against Aston Villa. Of his 13 goals in these 40 Appearances) NINE have been in open play. In the same time period he has appeared 2 (1) for his country, scoring a penalty (won by him) plus a goal in open play and an assist. So in 43 appearances (36.5 x 90's) he has scored 15 goals, 10 of which have been in open play. He has also won two other penalties scored by others.

Since Gylfi is gone, consider this.

Looking at current RFC players, in Long's last 40 appearances (not all starts) for RFC he has
scored 26% of our goals plus won 2 more penalties which became goals(30%)

Add in his assists and he's up to 36%

Grant Holt has just shown what a decent centre forward can do.
He came from Shrewsbury and has been a tremendous success.
Brian, there are strikers out there who don't necessarily have to cost a fortune.

Absolutely and LOOK at the horrendous gap between the two clubs!!

Norwich have got 3 WHOLE goals more than Reading in 19 games! We are falling apart.

We are talking about strikers, not teams. So how many open play goals does Holt have compared to Long (club games only)?

Whatever he likes as long as it is club games only. International performances are irrelevant in relation to club performances (of course snowball won't agree).

But just to help him out Holt has two cup goals this season and if wants to exclude them he can.

You mean Holt has more open play goals in cup competitions than Long has in all Reading appearances this season? Not looking good.

.

You're talking about the NEED for a striker
Obviously we desperately need to spend
money on transfers and wages to get an extra 3 goals

International performances are not irrelevant when judging a player's quality

If a player was scoring 1 in 1 regularly for his country
against decent international opposition, after a while
we'd need to question, not the player, but how the club plays him
