West Stand Man
MmmMonsterMunch It's no coincidence that as the team gets worse year on year, the support gets worse year on year. Not saying its right but you can sense most Reading fans don't expect much on the pitch for the next few years.

Sorry, but that is nonsense. Th time that are being talked about above (when the noise was louder) were when we were in Divs 3 and 4 and playing some pretty rank football (at times). MOST Reading fans do expect a lot on the pitch and they should do. I can't explain why the chanting is less loud now that it was a short while ago but I'll give you one possibility;

follow the 'proposed new chant/ song / anything else' threads and witness the virulent attacks on anyone who tries to suggest an idea. The weight of opinion is always that it is naff and that 'we are proper football fans who sing/ chant proper football songs etc'. The truth is that the naff songs like Man City's, Stoke' s and yes, even Leeds's do get the crowd going. It doesn't happen overnight but it does happen. Witness how wound up the opposition get when a mass of Stokies sing Delilah - it is totally naff but it does the trick.

The club has tried to create that with Sweet Caroline (a great chorus that could ring around the stadium), Sing for the Royals etc but there is a mass objection to it from us the fans (well not me, obviously!). Might I suggest that all it takes is for the crew at the back of the East Stand to come up with a song, to sing it (even against the pressure of silence from other areas and it will, eventually be adopted en masse.

Anyway, back to the original point, to suggest that the quality of football is lower now than in the hey days of the South bank is just wrong, wrong and wrong.

I meant the team getting worse since getting promoted in 2006 by the way. Certainly didn't mean historically. The atmosphere at the Mad Stad was fantastic when we got promoted but bit by bit it has fallen away as fans can see the team isn't going anywhere. I'm not saying that is an excuse but it absolutely is a factor. This season has been the quietest I can remember for a long time.

So, when the team is doing well the atmosphere generated by the home fans is better.

When the team is doing badly the atmosphere generated by the home fans is worse.

That comes as a bit of a shock.

I've mentioned this on another thread - I've seen Leeds away support in the late 80's and it was on a par with Barnsley's or Doncaster's today.

They may have been good today but go to Elland Road with 20k in there and you can hear a pin drop.

Reading fans can be loud when they want too. During the Premiership we were one of the loudest sets of fans going.

We're better than most teams.

In fact we outsing most teams, home and away.

SLAMMED They weren't anything special in the 2 games we played there when we were in the premiership.

Well, that's not surprising. Not a big game for Chelsea.

Surprised because Reading helped cost Chelsea the league in the first year by firstly knocking their goalie out and then taking a point from them on Boxing Day and the way Chelsea celebrated winning at the Madejski you'd have thought they'd won the Champions League....although they wouldn't know what that was like.

Not sure how this thread turned into another Chelsea thread, when we were discussing how bad Reading fans are.

soggy biscuit
2 world wars, 1 world cup OUR SUPPORT IS F**KING SH*T.

Throw your toys out the pram all you like those who disagree, but you're wrong and I don't care if this thread p*sses you off.

East stand, you make the old Southbank chantstarters sick that you're allowed in the ground.

Not fit to wear the hoops. Not fit to sit in the East Stand. Not fit to call yourself Reading fans like the generations above you who sung at the tops of our voices to help lift the team from the depths of English football to where we are now.

If you think we are bad you should try going to Fulham, Chelsea or Wigan.

Atmosphere at the Bridge is ALOT better than the Mad Stad. Probably something to do with there not being many empty seats.

Why didn't you use Spurs for the Free Flags? Afterall, they did it this years CL. United gave out free scarves....It;s the way football is. It's just I've never seen a club give out a free piece of card that says "BRING IT ON' before and then the announcer trying to get the crowd to sing.

Thought we did ok on Saturday, and defo got noisier in 2nd half.
Leeds heard us anyway.

And since when were Leeds ever Champions of Europe?
It was as embarrassing of them to sing that as us doing so for having beaten Liverpool!

Btw been to Chelsea - Wet Sham at S/B & it was really quiet other than 1500 Eastenders.

I move around the ground a lot, bit of a slag really. At night games I go in GU3 or GU4 so I can get away quicker after the game, other times Im in the East Y20 at the back KK, Ive dabbled in the North.

Because my flashplayer wasnt working ( IPad doesnt run it ) I took pot luck for Leeds in Y19.

I ended up in Row W, there were three fellas in Z there who did not, not once, give up singing all game, they were slagging the drummer off ( who doesnt drum much to be fair ) and all in all just trying to get things going. No takers, none around me at least. I think were too middle class.

I couldnt hear Y25/26 at all, only the Leeds fans. I found the whole thing a bit eerie. There were fans there on Saturday who looked like they'd never been to a game before in their life, wonder how many will be at Coventry?

I thought the best atmosphere this season was just after we went 1-3 down to Donny, I really think we made a difference.

Why not be part of the solution and try to identify why the support falls short of your standards, why it is important to you that we have those standards, what exactly those standards are and finally suggest measures which could be incorporated into a plan in order to reach a desired standard.

Personally, I think alcohol helps a crowd lose their inhibitions and start chanting - you only have to look at the number of cars queued up to depart the stadium after the game (of 5 mins before the final whistle) to see that a large percentage of our fans are not drinking.

On the plus side, I thought it was great when the PA bloke asked for a round of applause for NPower who were presenting a cheque for £1,000 to the Chairman only for the crowd to respond with absolute silence.

I have nothing against the PA guy, He seems to be passionate about the team but "be loud, be proud, back the boys and make some noise" is all that is wrong with the game today. I cringe with embarasment everytime.... A bloke with a mike telling us to make some noise is not the answer, althougjh as an experiment maybe he should shout that out during the game.

lol forgot about that, the bloke behind gave a huge 1970's raspberry at that point which I did find funny and quaint at the same time.

Another grand in SJM's pocket and we should give him a round of applause!

Ah I see. You need a big game to sing.

Fair enough then.

Does it not become a big game when you're throwing away the title with a 2-2 home draw?
