We replaced Trevor Senior, Kevin Bremner and Steve Wood with......

Colin Gordon, Francis Joseph and Paul Franklin

Who were all replaced within 6 months by our three most expensive signings ever at the time, only 1 of whom was still at the club 8 months later.

Mid Sussex Royal Come to think of it most of our record signings have been complete duds since Deathie in 1970.

Hughie Cheetham
George Shipperley
Steve Moran
Emersae Fae
Greg Halford

there must be others

Asaba & Convey were also around the record signing mark. As were Lita, & Seol. (possibly Rosenior depending on what order we signed him & Fae) None of them set the world alight Lita had a good season and a couple of good patches, Seol & Convey had one good season each.

In fact... have we ever bought a player for £1m or more who has lived up to the price tag?

What about players who have cost over £500k who have been a big success?

This list surely demonstrates that RFC should never spend comparatively 'big' money. Near enough every record signing at the time (Joslyn,Moran, Caskey, Asaba, Lita)has proved to be a waste of money. One to add is Terry Hurlock, seemed to spend more time suspended during his brief Royals career but went on to become a legend at Millwall.

Caskey is ridiculous. The man score over 20 goals in a season and was one of our best players consistently during his time here. You might as well say Kitson, or Sidwell were shit for us.

I wasn't disappointed by Moran. He was fat and fùcked up before he joined us.

Evers for me, shortly followed by a post-contract signing Chris Casper and also by Stuart Gray.

"He's going to be a great signing Bobby, you mark my words" said Bottler Snr, "He's Eddie Gray's lad"

Happy days.

How was he a disappointment? He was signed as a short-term backup, something to augment the strikers we already had. Scored 1 in 3 for us, which isn't an awful return (Better than a certain hurler, anyway).

God, I can't believe someone mentioned Hughie Cheetham. I thought I was the only old fart on here who would remember him. Sadly, as a 10 year old I had a picture of him up on my bedroom wall next to Debbie Harry. The lead singer of Blondie probably would have done a better job on the left wing.

Lambert was class but wasn't really interested. Steve Moran was a major disappointment. Marek I had high hopes for but it didn't work out and, frankly, I'm not entirely sure that this was his fault but that's another story.

If truth be told, I reckon Reading have fewer disappointments than most teams that could be mentioned but that is, frankly, because we don't really spend much money on players.

On a different note. The best money ever spent by Reading was on Simon Osborne. I still find it hard to believe that he cost us 90,000 and was, in my opinion, one of the most creative and talented players I have ever seen play for our club in the 35 odd years I have been a supporter.

If Caskey had lived up to his potential he would never have played for us. Essentially a fat, third tier David Beckham but saved us from relegation. I don't see how this could possibly be dissapointing....

1.Sean Evers - massive hype, utter garbage.
2.Steve Moran - ditto above.
3.James Lambert - loads of talent, Robin Friday's mindset.

Picking up on that, Dariusz Wdowczyc (free transfer), Jimmy Quinn (£40K). Both internationals, signed by the same bloke who got Ossie in, and is still pilloried by some of our small minded contributors.
