Those defending him must be feeling a bit silly now after McDermott has just blatantly come out on the OS as saying he wants a striker but a striker will be too expensive.

If Mr One Goal becoming Mr Two Goals in any way gives tightarse moneygrabbing John "I have this £7million out of the blue, which I didn't want, but I won't let you have any of it" Madejski an excuse not to fund a DESPERATELY needed striker then I wish to God he hadn't scored his second goal of his miserable season.

Under McDermott he has played

37 Starts 6 sub appearances (one rather crucial at Liverpool where he won the equaliser and scored the winner)
not even a season's worth of games and has FIFTEEN goals, 10 from open play


He won the game for us today with both goals, the second in the 88th minute.
He won the game for us at Liverpool.
He put us 1-0 up and 2-0 up versus Villa
He won the game v Barnsley
He won the game v Plymouth with both goals, the second in the 90th minute
He got the crucial equaliser against Norwich

I have a spreadsheet for last season and this, Ian, but I just eyeballed and counted the 90s/120s as obvious starts etc.

Possible I made small errors, eg seeing a 60 and presuming a start, when maybe someone came on as a sub after 30

I dont often come on this site. the reason is the utter claptrap that some of these so called
Reading supporters come up with if they had there way poor Long would be put in front
of a firing sqaud, The lad works his socks off for the club and i was so pleased he got a double
yesterday and he will go on and be our top scorer this season just give a break and support him
unless your a swindon fan

That is the type of performance we want from Shane. It still had all the good things from his other matches this season (the workrate, the touches, holding the ball up, etc) but this time he also took a chance and got an elusive goal from open play. One performance doesn't mean he has turned the corner on his goalscoring but it is a positive sign and maybe he needed a game against Derby to spur him on. Maybe this will be the start of one of those runs of goals that he has most seasons......

Also I would like to praise him on his penalty taking. He has now turned in to a very accomplished penalty taker and his penalty yesterday was straight from the textbook.

So keep it up Shane and get a few more over the Christmas period.....

So the fact that McDermott agrees with the blindingly obvious notion that we need another striker is somehow a slight against Long???????????? Long could be David Villa and we'd still need another striker.

I'm not "blinded" by anything. Shane Long is a very important player to this club,
has been involved in about 50% of all our goals this season (in the games he played)
and, as predicted, he is getting better each season.

Barring serious injuries, he will be a sought-after striker. Big deal he isn't the most prolific,
but a goal every 250/225 minutes is not at all bad.

He's more than just a striker, does loads of work off the ball, hammers defenders, wins pens and free-kicks.

Why the bloke continues to get criticism and yet other players missing chances are glossed over, beats me.

Shane will do OK to well this season, better next season, even better the year after.
