According to Fordham, we are apparently put off buy Swindon's asking price of 1.5 mil. Typical Reading

http://www.getreading.co.uk/sport/footb ... t_for_sale

"It is believed that Royals have made an enquiry to bring Swindon Town ace and former Royals trainee Charlie Austin back to Berkshire.

However, the Robins are reluctant to let him go on the cheap and Reading look to have been put off by the steep asking price for the striker who has netted 17 times already this season."

He also said it last Saturday on the webchat.

What is he 'worth' in todays modern game?

Talking about a young striker early 20's that is set to hit 25 goals in back to back seasons.

He will not go anywhere for less than £1.5-2million.

If we paid that, it'd be a massive £1.5M sized egg on Nicky Hammond's face.

With Long starting to score and Hunt & Church still picking up the odd goal here and there it is hardly surprising that we'd take a second thought over £1.5m. Especially given our wonderful record with big money signings.

Asaba, Convey, Lita, Seol, Fae, Rosenior, Halford, Duberry, Bikey, Matejovsky, Mills...

None of them have really been standout successes (yet), though some have done well for a while.

How many clubs outside of the premiership can afford this sort of money?Half a dozen or so?

Swindon don't want to sell him. They don't have to make him available to everyone.

You will not see Austin leave Swindon in January for any less than £1.5million and you will not sign someone with as much potential and proven track record as him at that sort of age for anything less than that.

Makes you wonder what Long is now worth

9 for the last two seasons, playing half-a-season, 10 in this half-season
plus 5 international goals in 500 minutes playing time

That's 33 goals in a fraction over a season and a half's actual play

£1.5m for a player thats young, and a proven scorer is a possible £6m return in future years (ala Doyle)...if Reading can't see that the asking price is a price that will bring a return in the future then they are far too short sighted.....i thought Madejski would be someone that would be quite interested if you said you could treble/quadruple his investment in a few years time

£1.5m for Austin OR £1.5m for Tommy Smith????? young player investment (24) v old player (30/31) We were happy to fork out for Smith at the time...
