Snowball Makes you wonder what Long is now worth

9 for the last two seasons, playing half-a-season, 10 in this half-season
plus 5 international goals in 500 minutes playing time

That's 33 goals in a fraction over a season and a half's actual play

Talking £4-5million probably right now. Similar situation to Austin, if the club that owns him doesn't want to sell then he's going to cost loads more.

Now THAT would be a major gamble. That's nothing against Long, but £1.5million compared to £5million there's a fair amount of difference there.

it'll only bring a return like that if he is a success, for which there are no guarantees... as I said above, just look at our previous big buys. And he wouldn't have to be a bad player to not make it here. There are plenty of examples of good players just not working out at some clubs.

Austin is a proven scorer, albeit at a lower league level, but he has consistently delivered and I see no reason that if he joined Reading, it would all of a sudden dry up, he would be playing with better players and getting better service ...if Brum are interested then they obv see potential as well

I think we need 1 good(not mediocre) e.g `hunt` striker to get into the play-offs. Austin be a great buy,i think it be a good investment.

agreed loyalroyal - all the pressure is on Long to get the goals, cant see Church and Hunt doing the necessary shift in terms of goals, so if we can get in a quality forward to share the burden with Long, then it can only be good for prospects this season

...put it this way if Long gets injured...what then??

Shane Long hasn't become a consistant striker suddenly, so for me it's more of a concern of what happens when his goals dry up? Madejski will be sat there saying we're getting by OK and don't need another striker, but we do.

It doesn't always work like that though.

He's been spotted again with Madejski and Hammond, so this should now be a strong rumour.

Hmm, technically his last spotted was Jeremie Aliadiere, so it's 50/50

And he got the Lee Hendrie trial right too - but he got the JA and Mackail-Smith ones wrong, so it's 50:50.

Proven? Over a short time yes, and at one professional club. It's still a big gamble.
