Rumour: Church to Wolves?

by Barry the bird boggler » 10 Jan 2011 16:18

From TalkSport.com

Wolves are keeping tabs on Reading striker Simon Church.

Mick McCarthy already has three former Royals in his squad in Stephen Hunt, Kevin Doyle and Marcus Hahnemann and is now monitoring the progress of the promising 22-year-old.

Church has started just nine Championship games season and made 14 appearances from the bench. His four league goals have all come after being introduced by manager Brian McDermott in the latter stages.

The forward has struggled to secure a starting spot at the Madejski stadium, since making his debut for the club in 2009, resulting in loan spells at Crewe, Yeovil, Wycombe and Leyton Orient.
Church has 11 caps for Wales and with new manager Gary Speed in place he will want to feature regularly and become a permanent fixture.

Swansea and Nottingham Forest are also interested in signing the attacker who would command a fee of at least £1m.

Don't know about the rest of it but this is just pure bullshitting to make it sound like we don't want him. The loans came before his debut.

AT LEAST 1M? Surely that would mean SWP for £300,000 is a capital crime?

£1m would be decent money for him, but of our current strikers he's the one I'd most like to see stay for quite some time.

Make your frigging mind up - on the Cox thread you agreed with Geekins that we should never have let him go.

LOL!
i ruddy said if hes not ready yet woman. stop stalking me!

i like them both as players,id love them to succeed here, id like to have kept them both forever, or at least until they were finally ready to step up, whenever that may be, but if someone comes in before that, with a half decent bid, and the playerwants to go. you have to sell imo.and even if you end up buying themback again for loads of money in 5 years time, it doesnt mean you did the wrong thing.

How do you know Austin will do better than Church at this level.

When was the last time Reading sold a player and reinvested the whole amount into new players? You know we'd sell and use a fraction of the money for a replacement.

Church was obviously rated and last season, for a youngster not playing 46 full games plus cup games, 12 goals was a very decent haul.

And of course he's getting his international chances too. Remember talk of Liverpool sniffing around him?

But this season he just hasn't looked right. I have no idea why. For all I know he might have a niggly injury that's holding him back.

But I wonder if it's a confidence/ego thing?

Remember at the start of last season he made a big thing about of being Reading's number 1 striker.

This season, clearly he's back up to Shane Long and Noel Hunt, and I wonder if he's just not handling it well?

I think there is still a chance he may become a very good player, but I can't ever imagine him getting 25 goals.

But I also think he might drift down a league. I can't justify that in a knowledge-based way, more a gut feel.

I'd like him to go on loan for the rest of this season and get twenty starts, then we maybe would have a better idea.

But as someone said, he might leave and then come good and we'll be cursing.

Short-term, if we could get decent money and use it to get someone like Austin, then that (short term) would be good. Imagine us with Long, BWP, Austin and Hunt!!

Yes, three years on we might find that Austin was a limited CCC striker and Church finally came good and was in the Premiership at Everton, but that's a manger's job to make the tricky decisions.

Biggest problem for me is I can't see him staying sharp and committed as fourth-choice. He might go downhill.
