brendywendy and mills was at fault, who is a good player.

it just goes to show

I could be wrong but wasn't it pearce who put the ball behing for the corner - not saying the goal was his fault - just that the other side of the coin is that if pearce wasn't playing and we had someone better in there who was also happy to give the ball to the midfield rather than hoof (both mills and pearce at fault there) we might have retained possession better and controlled the game a bit more...

I couldn't understand why Pearce put the ball out for a corner.......had nobody around him and could have left it for the keeper

Perhaps Federici or whoever failed to communicate so as per any good defender - safety first.

Agreed but it was 5 of the first 6 posters as Ian wasn't being critical. Lol that he is only good enough for the lower leagues. He looks like an accomplished centre-half at this level. Only a couple of us defended him on this thread...scapegoat mentality and all that. Church is the latest scapegoat of course.

Wimb Hate to say it but 'greed, no lack of effort just a lack of talent. Happy to be proved wrong but just seems John Mackie v2.0, hopelessly out of his depth at this level.

Stand by what I said based on watching him in 2009/10 and the start of the season but as I said, more then happy to have been proved wrong.

floyd__streete I said in pre-season that I was seeing far too much of our Alex Pearce and Jem Karacan in the starting line-up for my liking. If these two are regular Championship-quality players then my name is Brendan Rodgers.

Possibly our two best players this season along with Long

Just because you're proved wrong doesn't mean an opinion at the time isn't a valid one. So few people are prepared to stick their neck out (Snowball excluded) and back individual players so unless you're quoted as saying 'Pearce will be in our first choice pairing by January' back in August then you should be eating a fair amount of humble pie yourself....

You can only hope that all those on this thread who were so unfair to Pearce have learned their lesson and will NOT do the same with Church, Manset, Morrison etc etc.

Players have good and bad patches - sometimes they have high confidence (Long now for example) and sometimes low confidence (Church at the moment). In general all our players give 100% every time they play for the club and that is all we can ask. The only time I would criticise a player is if they are not trying - which is what seemed to be the case with SHunt at times.

What? The difference between those of us that have backed Kebe,Long and Pearce as opposed to slagging them off as useless, lazy, slow and dogshite is really as stark as you can get. There's also a difference between blind prejudice and opinion.

Agreed blind prejudice is just stupid and it's fairly easy to pick out those people from those giving a reasoned opinion.

In my own view though there's nothing wrong with giving a negative opinion on a player as long as you can back it up with some sort of rationale, it's the very point of a forum, to get differing views etc. If you don't think someone's good enough then fair play say so, as long as you're happy to hold your hands up and admit you got it wrong afterwards.

I'd never condone booing a player in the stadium as it can't help the atmosphere but I utterly reject any notion that people should moderate their views on an internet forum 'just in case' they get it wrong. If you watched Jimmy Kebe throughout his early time here, then you'll utterly understand quite why people were so frustrated and annoyed with the bloke. The same for Long, Pearce and any other player that's come in for stick. Few rational posters ever accuse underperforming players with a lack of effort, it's just some don't see the ability either based on instinct or an opinion after a number of games.

It's easy to sit here and say 'told you so' when something goes the way you planned, my point was that unless you've actually gone balls out and said 'player x is going to be good' then you have no real right to laugh or criticise those who's opinions were proved wrong.

Fair enough Wimb. The thing I find frustrating is the constant slagging off of certain players. Its currently Church. With Pearce,Long and Church they are all still young and with time have improved/will improve. With Kebe it was all about him taking time to adapt to playing in England. Of course players deserve criticism but it often goes way beyond that on here with little allowance for the fact the players in question are learning and are not the finished article.

Glad to finally see a lot of you seeing his undoubted ability as a defender. A lot of the early criticism used be that he was slow and had the turning circle of a ferry. Not everyone is quick and no amount of training can change that. But you (well some of us) could see he had good mental atttributes such as anticipation, determination and tactically aware. He's great at winning headers and he was bit unluucky on some of the fouls given against him too. Anyway, I'm glad for him and hope he starts getting international recognition for Scotland.

International recognition for Scotland?-he's not that bad.
The current incumbent is 40 years old and two others both called Caldwell are hopeless so if he maintains current form for the rest of the season then he would have a chance.

Agree with the first line. I certainly had reservations about Pearce and still do, but most of those early posts were ridiculously judgmental and short-sighted. It is completely fair that the lols and I told you sos are now dished out given how vehement and dismissive of other opinions those who expressed them were.

I mean I was told by Slammed I couldn't have an opinion because I hadn't seen one game ffs! What a dick.

And I disagree about only having the right to criticise if you've balls out suppported a player from the beginning to come good. The problem is not having a negative or positive opinion of a player and being proved wrong. The problem is making your opinion up so conclusively so early. And as someone who usually says give it time, I reserve my right to say "I told you so you mong."

winchester_royal Worst defender in the Championship. His one saving grace is supposed to be his ability in the air....but he can't fcking head the ball straight.

We need Zurab.

Oops?

Fair play to the lad, he's come and leaps and bounds so far this season. Overtaken Karacan as the best of the current academy lot.

Perhaps, and it's a lesson learned for anybody not to count your chickens etc, especially with younger players. Depends how strong peoples opinions were and how open they were to other views, as with any debate really.

As for the last bit, In this particular case I think criticisms of Pearce were well founded at the time. He'd not set the world alight in 08/09, 09/10 or at the start of 10/11 and while yes young players need time to develop and grow the weight of the evidence to seemingly a majority of people was that Pearce wasn't up to this level. Now that may have been a hasty judgement and people such as myself rightly have to hold our hands up but my problem is with those that sit on the fence, don't even say, he could well turn into a good player, but keep quiet on the issue and then suddenly go around in a giant ROFLcopter across this forum  again it's more a minority I'm directing this at rather then good measured posters such as yourself, Brenders and Pearcey.

Pearcey it's a fair point about the constant slagging off of certain players but again it depends what people are saying. If you're saying Church is totally devoid of from and confidence right now then that's one thing but like you said thats different to 'he's god awful and has no talent'
