No Fixed Abode *Ancelotti says Chelsea didn't want Pienaar....

I thought he said that he didn't want Pienaar (backed up by the fact that he said he'd never spoken to Pienaar) - looks like someone went behind Ancelotti's back.

Oh yes - that would be right.

I know, a ridiculous statement. Chelsea never undermine their managers.

Royalee £18 million for the most average player in the Premiership, the only thing more laughable than the fee is this press conference! Houllier makes David Brent look like Winston Churchill.

If he joins Arsenal (or Chelsea) though, it can only be a good thing for England......we desperately need someone to fill Terry and Ferdinands boots.
Could you explain why Cahill shifting 3 or 4 places up in the league would be better for England?
Champions League experience as well by going to Arsenal at least (not certain Chelsea will make top 4) will help his development...?

We need a couple of our promising centre halfs to be really tested against the best and to show they can cope with the expectations and scrutiny of playing for England and the top clubs.

Look at what Wenger did with Adams. If he could progress Cahill half as much then England would benefit (I see Cahill as Terrys replacement in waiting).

But the international game is an irrelevance. At Arsenal, he'd be discouraged from representing his country in friendlies. Bolton seem to be doing a fairly good job of developing his talent, and his solidity has aided the transformation from being a clogging team no end. Neither of the two 'big' clubs allegedly lining up a move would guarantee him regular first-team games, and isn't that the most crucial part of improving a player's skills?

Honestly, looking at the way both Chelsea and Arsenal have played this season I think Cahill would get a very good run in either side.

Until Bolton start to qualify for the champions league and get through the group stages X amount of years in a row then I don't really think they can offer the same level of experience Arsenal can. How many Bolton players have been or are England regulars?!

Well Adams and Campbell are two pretty good and relevant examples of Arsenal and England regulars.

How many regular England centre backs haven't played regular top level European football in the last 10-15 years? I'd hazard a guess at none. Playing against the top European sides and with the pressure of being at a big club is The next step for Cahill.

Do you think he wouldn't get a game for Arsenal or Chelsea?

Upson, Jagielka, Southgate.

I'll just about give you Southgate, but I was after regulars as in starters and first choice and reliable.

Upson won a place in the squad, just, without top level experience (although you'd have to say it was the time at Arsenal that made him as a player) and I think Jagielka is much the same in that he isn't quite going to be a first choice unless he kicks on a bit more yet. To do that he needs Everton to be giving him games against the best.

Off the top of my head: Seaman, Adams, Dixon, Keown, Campbell, Wright, Cole, Walcott....

Then you have Wilshere and Gibbs looking likely to make it too

Disagree - it was Upson's time on loan with us that made him the player he is today.

Cant blame him really.....i know Liverpool are shite at the moment, if i were a player i would rather be there than Blackpool. Especially considering next season he could well be shite for Blackpool and nobody then want him

I know where you're coming from, but I'd say that his 3 month loan and 13 games for us allowed him to show how much he'd improved by being at Arsenal. It didn't make him that player, it just put him back in the shop window to show people what he could do.

It was that spell that won him his call up to the England squad, I agree totally, but we didn't suddenly make him that player.

Cahill will do ok for himself at Bolton, he's playing against good players for Bolton and doing well enough but if he wants to push on again and have a chance of establishing himself in the way Ferdinand or Terry have then he needs to play with and against the very best (IMO).
