Ethan Gage entered Empire Field in street clothes Wednesday and looked like a guy who'd be OK with Plan B.

The 19-year-old midfielder-defender has just returned from a three-week trial with English Championship side Reading.

He's long been itching to get to Europe, but said if things don't work out with Reading he'd be happy to return to Vancouver, where he's played for the past three seasons.

"It went really well," Gage said of his trial. "I was a big fan of the club, of the facilities. Honestly though, coming back and seeing this, all the new things going on with the Whitecaps… watching practice today in this beautiful stadium, I'd love to come back if things don't work out.

"I've always been a big fan of the Whitecaps. They've been really good to me."

Gage, a native of Cochrane, Alta., is out of contract with the Whitecaps but has an open invitation — for now — to join the club for training camp, which opened Monday.

He made a name for himself here by starting the USL-1 championship game in central midfield as a 17-year-old residency player.

The 2009 season was a frustrating step back, but he regained his confidence midway through 2010, filling in for the injured Wes Knight at right fullback.

Gage played 664 minutes with five starts in 11 appearances for Teitur Thordarson last season. He also wore the captain's arm band for Canada's under-20 national team and, in December, was named the Canadian men's under-20 player of the year.

Known here for his versatility, Gage trained exclusively as a central midfielder with Reading.

"It was great," he said. "Technically, the players are very good. I trained with the first team a bunch of times and that's what I definitely have to work on to catch up with them."

But he was confident that he left a good impression.

"I don't want to sound cocky, but I did very well," he said. "It's all up in the air right now."

Looks like they have got an Icelandic manager. Could have been recommended knowing our links already.

It is, I don't know why Feds doesn't throw the ball out more!

He only did it once on Saturday, everything else was launched high down field.

yes, but he's from Alberta (which is still in CA). So the title should be "Canadian Trialist"...no?

Alberta is a Canadian province, as is British Columbia

Ethan Gage, the Canadian trialist, hails from Cochrane, Alberta and plays professionally in Vancouver, British Columbia

The capital of British Columbia is Victoria, which is on Vancouver Island

Vancouver is the largest city in British Columbia and is not on Vancouver Island --it's on the North American mainland

Neither Vancouver Island in British Columbia nor Vancouver, British Columbia should be confused with Vancouver, Washington in the United States, which is across a river from Portland, Oregon and nowhere near Vancouver Island or Vancouver, British Columbia

So who's the American trialist? :|
