Victor Meldrew I wonder what Premier club would want him.
West Ham,the bottom club, have just signed on loan the player that gets in ahead of him for that rather poor international side,Ireland.
on the question of not paying much,Brett Pitman who has a similar goal ratio to Long this season cost just £400,000.
I could see Premiership clubs going for somebody like Bothroyd who has the top ratio for this level and has a better all-round game but Shane is a rather limited player and if any club were daft enough to offer £4 million I would bite their hands off-there are plenty around who we could bring in for less than half of that money and they might want to play for us rather than yearn for a bench place in the Premier League.

If you think "none", fantastic. I think you're wrong, though.

Poor "spin". This is the same player recently rated as SIX MILLION and is on such high wages
that Birmingham wouldn't meet his demands. He is (or was) a truly brilliant striker.

He's also a mature player, probably on his way down, however. Long is still one for the future.

Anyway, let's see who gets in tonight, shall we?

My, how quickly people tke a dodgy article where a player specifically says HE WANTS TO PLAY
(and NOT be a bench-warmer, but now he "yearns for a bench place in the Premier League"

The last time RFC allowed players huge wages to stay it went pear shaped, lets hope that Long realises that he is not certain to move to the Prem, and the best way to get there is with RFC, and push all he can till it is not possible with RFC, then perhaps someone will come in for him, if not then tough, we should not be upping his wages. If he cant live on 500k a year then tuff.

If you were full-time employed and earning 30k and you could do the same job with less stress and 4 days a week gets be paid 60k, would you take it?

Hmmm

Yes I would, I just do not think that RFC should offer higher wages just because a team at a higher level offers it. Take the money for the player, be a club that is a step up for a player, worked fro so many in the last few years, but we should not pay wages that we cannot afford

Row Z Royal I know a thread should be avoided when someone opens with "So you're saying that...".

Actually, you should avoid any thread started by Dodger.

Snowball,
Robbie Keane you describe as a "truly brilliant striker".
This is the moment when you finally flipped as you can't get much higher than truly brilliant so where does that put the likes of Messi,Ronaldo,Tevez,E'to,even Van Persie.
Your hype of all Irish players is truly brilliant and ludicrous.
Robbie Keane,4th choice striker at Spurs moves to the bottom club to get a game.
Get real old man.

If we can get £4 million+ for someone who has only ever really performed in fits and starts and had numerous chances that others haven't been given at Reading (Tyson, Cox etc.) then as long as we can re-invest an impressive 40k of it on another window cleaner from Eastleigh then I am all in favour.

Keane was a truly brilliant striker. He cost 6 Million as long back as 1999, £13 Million when he went to Inter, then 12 Million when he went to Leeds (where he scored 9 goals in his fiorst 14 games). He went for the bargain price of 7 Million when Leeds imploded.

Sold to Liverpool for 19-20.3 Million

Sold to Spurs again for 12-16 Million

10 Premiership Goals 2001-02
13 Premiership Goals 2002-03
16 Premiership Goals 2003-04
17 Premiership Goals 2004-05
16 Premiership Goals 2005-06
22 Premiership Goals 2006-07
15 Premiership Goals 2007-08 (Plus 8 Cup Goals)

three times player of the year for Spurs

431 Domestic Appearances 158 Goals
104 International Appearances 45 Goals

(what a rubbish player)

Agreed. If I could swap Shane Long for Robbie Keane tomorrow, I'd do so like a shot.

Church was worse and I'm a fan of his. Yes a couple of shots on target but rest of time you would nt have known he was on the pitch

HRK looked poor, below Championship standard.

Church had two shots but looked like most of this season,
lost, lacking confidence, barely in the game.

Good dummy from Shane for the goal
(I guess Dunn called leave it) but
one poor pass and he looked like he
was going through the motions

IMO it's a deliberate leave. He pulls his kick. It's not an air shot.

Man Friday Who are you then Wimb? Lawrie Sanchez?

OUTED

And in response to Snowball's last response of mine, we have had Shane for 6 years now, yes he's only just starting to find a real grove but unless the guy signs a new deal then his value is going to go down and down simply because he'll be a free in July of 2012. That's a risk we could only take if we felt we had a very serious chance of promotion next season, otherwise you have to take a good priced offer and reinvest in someone that will be ready when B Mac thinks we are capable of really going for it.

It's a sad state of affairs but for a club like Reading we have little other choice :(

How much could/will they get for him? 2 million? Is it worth it to sell one of the team's best young players for that little, little in the big scheme of things? I'm not sure. We won't get Sigurdsson money for him, not even close, that is for sure...

And from Shane's point of view if he moves up he will probably do very well to land on a team in the bottom third of the table and has a good chance of coming right back down the following season.

And who could fill his shoes within? Church has been completely off his form this year, so I wouldn't count on him. Manset? Young, very athletic, talented but still raw...a work in progress. None of the other strikers have really impressed me this year. And with the constant drumbeat of "financial responsibility" I, with recent history being my guide, doubt they will go out and spend 500K-1M to pick up someone. Shane leaving could be a lose-lose for him and the team, imo.
