Hoop Blah Kelly's been injured for a hell of a long time, hence the extra surprise when he was included on the tour ahead of Cummings.

And, as Ian Royal himself points out, hasn't been near the first team since Coppell left, so even more surprise when he was included on the tour ahead of Cummings.

Rags to riches or zero to hero, the Cummings story is one of a massive turn around in fortunes.

Long may he continue to perform so well and enable us to remind IR that!

Ian Royal
Hoop Blah He was bombed out by both Rodgers and McDermott though Ian.

Did Cummings even make the pre-season tour party?

Bombed out? He wasn't ready to come into a ropey defence in a team short of confidence at that point and we needed experience. We went with it in Griffin and he's been in the background waiting for his chance and taking the opportunities he's been given since.

Not bombed out? McDermott working hard with him?

From today's GetReading:

Just six months ago McDermott told Cummings that he was free to leave the club. However, in a dramatic change of fortunes he is now showing he has the talent to make it at Madejski Stadium.

“It’s easy to bottle it and leave because you’re not playing,” he said. “But I’ve signed for three years and I want to see my contract out and get another. I don’t regret anything and I don’t let anything get in the way of my football. I’m mature and man enough to get on and just focus on my football. Any time the manager needs me I’m there and ready.”

Sounds like the main reason for the turn around of this rags to riches/zero to hero story is Shaun himself!

Fair play to the man.

He may have been told he was free to leave, but the turned round and said no I'll do what ever it takes to make it here. And so the hard work to make him the player we are seeing now began.

Lets hope eh?

That and he had a 3 year contract on decent money he wouldn't have got anywhere else of course.

andrew1957 Much better all round.

Is it a coincidence but the last time Ian Harte did not play we won and tonight he did not play and we won again. He might be good at set plays but the defence is so lacking in pace when he plays and he offers little threat going forwards apart from set pieces - and even those have been less effective recently.

Ian Harte - you're not sure about him then? :D

Since when have Reading been world beaters in terms of wages?!

And, contrary to cynical belief, most footballers aren't happy just to sit collecting their wages in the reserves. They want to be playing in a first team and I suspect that is particularly so with youngsters trying to make a career for themselves.

Gooding's view was that most footballers in his position would have opted to try to re-ignite their careers elsewhere.

Its hardly rags to riches or zero to hero ! Yes he got offered to leave and stayed but he has only played a few games this season hardly makes him a hero .
