Alex McCarthy No.1

by roadrunner » 01 Mar 2011 21:33

He looked every bit the top keeper the club keep saying he will be tonight.

I hope that form continues and that Federici doesn't just walk back into the team. McCarthy deserves his chance and it should be up to him now to keep the shirt.

Delighted for the boy, other winning tonight and reaching the 1/4 finals again, his performance feels like a victory in itself.

Pleased for the lad.

It would have been so easy to freeze up there.

Similar performance to that of Federici's performance against Man Utd at Old Trafford.

Skippy is a load of rubbish and I said this for ages.

I truely hope that McCarthy gets to keep the shirt as well. Well done to him, I am truely pleased for him.

Do You See?

It sounded like he did well and did what he had to do, but Fedders showed those signs while Hahnemann was No.1. But then he had a sustained run that helped him, but he didn't seem ready to take over then.

McCarthy needs time to bed in and I'd hate for him to be measured indefinitely against tonight's performance. He isn't always going to be like that and understanding has to be shown towards him so that he doesn't blow his confidence at the first hurdle.

Lets not go off half cocked people. Great save, good all round, but one game does not a brilliant keeper make. Great prospect, but did he really show us anything Fed hasn't this season? Not really, he was tested only a couple of times at most.

Can we keep a sense of perspective and realistic expectations please?

I like the arrogant nonchalance he shows when ambling about the penalty area holding the ball. His big save was extraordinary.

Absolutely class save. Even if Federici was to regain fitness and McCarthy never plays for us again he will always be remembered for "that save"

If he keeps performing to that standard, then dropping him as soon as Fed is fit will not only be desperately unfair on Alex, but could also have a negative impact on his development.

He's got all the attributes to potentially be a top 'keeper, could do with some work on his decision making and kicking though...

To be honest all keepers from the conference up are capable of that sort of performance on an occasion; the thing that distinguishes is consistency. If McCarthy can play like that most weeks then we have a real gem, one who will be leaving in the medium term future.

He should get a solid month or so from what I've heard anyhow, Feds is out for a while. If he proves himself as consistent in that spell maybe it'll be time to cash in on the Fedders £2mill rumours.

On a night when Reading fans are celebrating a great victory - you have once again demonstrated that you have no class. How sad.

Fair play to Brendan Rodgers, he said when the 09/10 season started that Reading wouldn't need to buy a 'keeper for 10 years. Seems true so far.

Looks a fabulous prospect. One small concern is he does seem a little rooted to his line at times but that may just be a confidence issue.

Whatever McCarthy goes on to do in his career, we will always remember him for that save.
