Just imagine how well we'd be doing with Gylfi if the rest of the team were playing as well as they are now, or if we had Ledge and Gylfi playing together.

Ian Royal And the whole team was generally a shambles until after Xmas for the most part.

I've already eliminated most of that issue and just looked at Gylfi's games.

Don't forget, no Bertrand, no Harte, no Zurab, maybe no Griffin,
and Long and Feds gone in January, cos that would be the price...

It's still a stupid way of doing it, but if you look at the period after which McDermott took over we got 1.6 points a game with him playing... which is better than we are currently doing. Looking at a Team's performances to comprehensively quantify an individual's contribution is just retarded.

Only an utter moron would argue we are better without a player who could score 20 goals in a season, was worth £7m and was, in general, so creative and dangerous.

That Friday Feeling Just imagine how well we'd be doing with Gylfi if the rest of the team were playing as well as they are now, or if we had Ledge and Gylfi playing together.

You SURE that would work?

Elwood may be a God but he needs HELP in midfield.

Gylfi's defensive qualities were, ummmm, ummmm...

Gylfi worked in a 451, so he'd take Hunt's place

Let's see... Gylfi's goals (9 pens helps) puts him a little ahead (11 minutes)

3,479 Minutes 2009-10 22 Goals and 10 Assists One of Either every 109 Minutes Siggurdson (Penalty Taker)
1,794 Minutes 2010-11 08 Goals and 07 Assists One of Either every 120 Minutes Hunt (and Hunt is getting better and brings out the best in Shane)

Hunt is the better assister on the stats

256 Minutes per Assist Hunt
348 Minutes per Assist Gylfi

But Long is better with Hunt than he was with Gylfi

Long & Gylfi versus Long & Hunt

5,773 31 Goals 12 Assists 186 Minutes per Goal, 134 Minutes per Assist or Goal
5,015 28 Goals 12 Assists 179 Minutes per Goal, 125 Minutes per Assist or Goal

I haven't teased out games where they didn't combine in either case
but Hunt starting with Long this season? Do just that and Long-Hunt's figures rocket

Only an utter moron would ignore the Hunt-Long pairing's incredible success.

Only an utter moron would ignore that Gylfi took 9/10 penalties to inflate his goal tally.

Only an utter moron would ignore the fact that Noel Hunt's assists per minute is better than Gylfi's

Gyfli is a brilliant individual but playing him weakened us in other areas

Almost as if football is a *team* game and so trying to extrapolate a team's performance from the performances of a single player is futile.

Extrapolating from the team that played so well 2nd half of last season which included Gylfi wouldn't be that though.

It would still be a pointless exercise mind you.

A 0-3 Sheffield Utd <<< (Missed Pen)

H 1-0 Barnsley <<<
A 2-1 Doncaster XXXX Gylfi did not play (Long, Howard)
H 2-1 Plymouth XXXX Gylfi did not play (Long scored both goals)
A 3-1 Crystal Palace <<<
A 0-2 Blackpool <<<
H 5-0 Sheffield Wed <<<
H 4-1 Derby County <<<
H 2-0 Bristol <<<

A 2-2 Scunthorpe <<<
A 0-3 Watford <<<
H 4-1 Preston <<<

9 Won
5 Drawn
7 Lost

21 Games 32 Points = 1.52 ppg

This is the same ppg as we are averaging in the non-Gylfi games this season

You might care to notice that in this period
we played 3 times without Gylfi and won all three games.

average ppg 3.0

There is a bit of myth-making going on, confused by the cup-run last year

These are the facts (League games under McDermott)

9 Won, 5 Drawn, 7 Lost, 21 Games 32 Points = 1.52 ppg "a 70 point season" (Gylfi Playing)

Now add the three games where he DIDN'T play (all wins)

W12-D5-L7 41 Points from 24 and we're up to 1.71, the equivalent of a 79-point season

Watford start to have a sniff again, but fantastic two results from Burnley 0-3 and 2-2
for what we can see as their two games in hand on us.

There are NINE six pointers in the next three weekends of Championship Soccer.

01 37 36 73 QPR
02 37 15 66 Norwich
03 37 16 63 Swansea
04 37 14 62 Cardiff
05 37 11 61 Leeds
06 37 14 60 Nott'm Forest

07 37 18 57 Reading if we beat Preston in our GiH
07 36 09 57 Burnley
08 37 15 56 Watford
09 37 04 55 Hull
10 37 01 55 Leicester
11 36 17 54 Reading
12 37 11 53 Millwall

I don't see how you can consider QPR v Leeds a "mutually throat cutting" game (mmmmm - nice imagery there, and a very clever use of cut & paste to boot....).

The only result that matters in that game (and in any game where QPR are involved with teams we are competing against) is a QPR win. A Leeds win would be a terrible result for us! (unless you seriously think that we can overtake QPR of course........)

The same with Swansea v Hull, and Norwich v Forest; in those games the best result for us are victories for Swansea and Norwich respectively, or, at worst, draws. There are 6 promotion places up for grabs, and we only need one of them. It doesn't make much sense to hope those teams we are most likely to overtake take points off those teams we are less likely to overtake.

Therefore, when any of QPR, Cardiff, Swansea and Norwich play any of Leeds, Forest, Burnley, Watford, Leicester or Hull, the best result for us are wins for any of those 4. We could also do with those 4 teams taking points off teams currently just below us to reduce the threat of a Pompey or Millwall coming through as well.

Where 2 of our genuine rivals are playing each other (eg: Forest v Burnley), the best result is a draw, as it is if any of the 4 highlighted teams above play each other.

I skim read it; if something really silly stands out, I read it properly; if it is totally stupid, I'll comment, but generally now I just leave it cos its wrong to mock the afflicted.
