The Southbank sit down protest

by SpaceCruiser » 16 Mar 2011 21:42

Can anyone remember this, I think it was in 1989 and no idea what game it was. All I can remember that it took place after the game that Reading had lost and quite a few fans were chanting "BRANFOOT OUT!!!"

Do I remember right that somebody came out with a megaphone to tell the fans to go home?

I think I was there and I remember looking upon it all with air of baffled curiosity cos I wasn't sure if it was going to make any difference. And I seem to remember marching with everybody round to the North stand.

Reason I'm talking about this is cos of the recent sackings in the Championship and no doubt the fans of those teams have been moaning about those managers etc etc.

Notts County. A delegation of supporters was invited in to speak to Branfoot on the condition that the rest of the crowd dispersed.

I remember buying the TTB Notts County Debate special a few weeks later.

Wasn't there a pitch invasion at home to Palace after losing 6-1 around 97? SJM Said something like he would not bow down to mob culture?

If you remember Uri Gellar took it upon himself to stand up and say we should all use positive thinking to help us out of the situation

Funnily enough he nearly got lynched and also Im sure it was the first time I'd heard 'shut up you c**t' screamed in unison

I remember a sit down protest after losing 6-1 at home to Crystal Palace....I think Jimmy and Mick were the managers at the time.
Anyone else remember this?

Now that we have an all seater stadium does that mean that any future efforts would be 'stand-up' protests?

For every embarassing official/STAR organised rumblesticks day we've had a legendary unofficial fans organised PANTS Day or Beard Day.

I only wish that "Be loud, be proud and back the boys and make some noise" thing would stop now, It had a shelf life of maybe three games not three years.

.

It wasn't a delegation as such. They just let in a handfull of people who were nearest.

The TTB write up was quite interesting though, as it made it clear the Branfoot was his own worst enemy at times with some of his comments. Saying he sold Hurlock because his best days were behind him (when he went to Millwall and was a key player in their rise to the top flight) for example, when the truth was apparently that he was being "unproductive" in the dressing room.

I recall sitting down on the Southbank before the match had finished. Certainly the calls of Branfoot Out started before the final whistle.

Getting to the ground and chanting Branfoot out before the game starts >>> chanting Branfoot out afterwards.

There was also a pitch invasion after Port Vale 0-3 in 1998 - cracking picture in Rusting Tin. SJM promptly left the country for 18 months!

And was there some lone anti-Hurley raider came on (v Lincoln 1975???) that got us a reprimand from the FA?

'Bring it on' day is my personal favourite, closely followed by song sheet day.
